Filipino adobo chicken What does Google’s March 15 homepage mean?

It’s not uncommon for Google to have a Google Doodle in place of its regular blue, red, yellow and green lettering to represent a significant day in history on its homepage — but what does the March 15 image of two smiling children sniffing wafts of hot, well-seasoned chicken thighs have to do with the date?

filipino-adobo-chicken-what-does-googles-march-15-homepage-mean

Google is celebrating “Filipino Adobo” chicken in its Google Doodle because, after the word “adobo” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in December 2006, it was also added to word list on the OED’s quarterly update on this day in 2007, the company said.

Filipino adobo chicken is a popular dish that originated from the Philippines and is “sometimes considered to be the unofficial national dish of the country,” according to some outlets. There are many variations and recipes on how to make adobo in multiple cultures, and Filipino adobo recipes also vary according to different parts of the Philippines, Google’s site explained.

Generally, adobo-style cooking requires the following: meat, seafood or vegetables braised into a stew, usually with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves and black pepper, and laid over a bed of rice. But for Filipino adobo, places like Visayas and Southern Luzon have their own regional styles — which depends on the available ingredients in the area.

Visayas locals make “adobong puti,” which “uses exclusively vinegar and no soy sauce,” and is considered by some “to be the original indigenous style of Filipino adobo.” For Southern Luzon, “creamier adobo with coconut milk is more popular,” Google’s site read.

The March 15 Google Doodle artist, Anthony Irwin, has a special compassion for cultural ties when it comes to food.

Irwin said, “For children of immigrants, our relationship with our parents’ food is a complex one. On one hand, my mother’s cooking made me feel like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. It felt special and safe and warm. But on the other hand, most kids just want to fit in. Growing up in the U.S., I didn’t want my food to be special. I didn’t want to feel different. I just wanted to be like everyone else.

As an adult, Irwin said he looks for ways to feel proud of his culture and heritage — pride he didn’t feel as a child. Filipino food creates that connection between his mother’s identity and his own.

“So I tried to capture that simple childhood joy of leaning in and savouring the kind of food that makes home feel like home. Kain nang mabuti!,” Irwin said.

What Is Adobo? Google Doodle Celebrates Filipino Dish

While there are many kinds of adobo in the Philippines, they all share the basic elements of marinated meat or vegetables braised into a stew

Google Doodle is celebrating the "tender, juicy and soulful" adobo, a popular Filipino dish and the first food from the country to be featured on the platform.

Wednesday's Doodle marks the 16th anniversary of adobo's inclusion in the Oxford English Dictionary’s quarterly word list update.

While there are many kinds of adobo in the Philippines, they all share the basic elements of marinated meat or vegetables braised into a stew. Common ingredients for adobo are vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves and black pepper. Regional variations make their adobo sweet, sour or salty.

Locals in Visayas are known for the "adobong puti" (white adobo), considered by some to be the original indigenous style, which uses vinegar instead of soy sauce. In the northern part of the country, where coconut milk is a food staple, creamier adobo recipes like "adobong manok sa gata" (chicken adobo with coconut milk) are extremely popular. In other regions, some substitute meat with seafood like squid, or locally available vegetables like "kangkong" (water spinach) or "sitaw" (string beans).

The dish has evolved over the centuries and has spread worldwide. In a blog post, Google Doodle called adobo "a symbol and expression of Filipino pride that varies from region to region, family to family, palate to palate."

The animated Doodle was illustrated by Anthony Irwin, the child of Filipino immigrants in the U.S. Irwin recalled his childhood inner struggles of the comfort he felt eating his ethnic food while also yearning to fit in.

"For children of immigrants, our relationship with our parents' food is a complex one. On one hand, my mother's cooking made me feel like I was exactly where I was supposed to be," Irwin said. "It felt special and safe and warm. But on the other hand, most kids just want to fit in. Growing up in the U.S., I didn't want my food to be special. I didn't want to feel different. I just wanted to be like everyone else."

He continued, "Now as an adult, I get to find all of these opportunities to be proud in ways childhood didn't let me feel proud. I can claim Filipino food as a part of my culture and celebrate the connection it creates between my mother's identity and my own."

Google Doodle salutes Filipino Adobo

March 15 (UPI) -- Wednesday's Google Doodle celebrates the culinary delight of Filipino Adobo.

The animated artwork shows a boy and girl happily inhaling the smell of marinated meat that can be found in upscale restaurants, as well as Filipino homes all over the world.

The word "Google" is spelled out by the images of a wooden fork and ingredients for the sauce such as garlic, a bay leaf, and a bottle of vinegar or soy sauce.

Clicking on the artwork leads to a page filled with links to recipes for the dish.

"Growing up in the U.S., I didn't want my food to be special. I didn't want to feel different. I just wanted to be like everyone else," Anthony Irwin, the artist who created the Doodle, said in a press release.

"Now as an adult, I get to find all of these opportunities to be proud in ways childhood didn't let me feel proud. I can claim Filipino food as a part of my culture and celebrate the connection it creates between my mother's identity and my own," he added.

"I tried to capture that simple childhood joy of leaning in and savoring the kind of food that makes home feel like home. Kain nang mabuti!"

Adobo: what is Filipino dish and why is it being celebrated by Google Doodle?

The date today, 15 March, is significant because it was on this day in 2007 that the word “adobo” appeared for the first time published in the Oxford English Dictionary

Celebrate Filipino Heritage Month with chicken adobo and crispy banana fritters

Chef Leah Cohen tapped into her Filipina heritage to help reach her full potential as a chef.

Growing up half-Filipina, I never thought my mother's food would become my life's work, but after spending years honing my skills as a chef preparing other people's food, I knew that the only way to reach my potential would be to tap into my heritage.

I was four years old when we took our first trip to the Philippines, ate my first bite of lumpia Shanghai and halo-halo. Year after year we would go back, and I continued to explore and learn how to prepare authentic Filipino food. These trips became my joy, a way to learn, explore and escape from my day-to-day in New York City.

While lumpia Shanghai may have been the first Filipino food that my mother served me, chicken adobo was the first Filipino dish that she taught me how to cook. Chicken adobo is a simple, one-pot dish with five staples that all Filipinos have on hand — soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper, garlic and bay leaves. I add in a few more ingredients to really amplify the flavor. While working in other kitchens over the years, this has always been my go-to staff meal. It is easy to make, and while it braises away in the oven, I can get my prep done. Most importantly, the staff always loves it. Now I make it for my son, Carter G. It is one of his most loved dishes.

Turon and halo-halo are the most popular desserts in the Philippines. We know halo-halo was one of my first bites in the Philippines — and it's a wildly popular dish on my Pig & Khao menu here in NYC — but it's not the easiest dish to make. Turon, on the other hand, is much easier to make. It is like the dessert version of lumpia — a sweet spring roll filled with banana, jackfruit and brown sugar.

Adobo: what is Filipino dish and why is it being celebrated by Google Doodle?

The date today, 15 March, is significant because it was on this day in 2007 that the word “adobo” appeared for the first time published in the Oxford English Dictionary

If you’ve checked Google today and suddenly found your stomach growling and mouth watering, then there’s a good reason - it’s because today’s Google Doodle is celebrating Filipino adobo.

The date that the Google Doodle appears always holds significance for the subject in question, and today’s Doodle is no different. The reason that Google has chosen 15 March to celebrate Filipino adobo is because in December 2006, the word adobo was added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), and on today’s date in 2007 it was included on the word list of the OED quarterly update.

What is Filipino adobo?

Filipino adobo is a hugely popular dish which originates from the Philippines and is sometimes considered to be the unofficial national dish of the country. While there are loads of different variations of adobo, they all share the same basic elements - meat, seafood or vegetables that have been braised into a delicious stew, usually with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves and black pepper.

Adobong puti, enjoyed by locals in Visayas, is considered by some to be the original indigenous style of Filipino adobo. This version of the meal uses exclusively vinegar and no soy sauce. Meanwhile in places like Southern Luzon, creamier adobo with coconut milk is more popular. Regional changes to the recipe generally depend on what ingredients are readily available in that area.

Once cooked, the adobo is usually served over a bed of rice, which we can see in the Google Doodle.

While the word adobo might make you think of Spanish adobo, Filipino adobo is a completely separate dish that was developed and evolved independently from the Spanish version.

Who designed the Doodle?

Today’s Google Doodle comes from artist Anthony Irwin.

Talking about his thought process behind designing the Doodle, Irwin said: “For children of immigrants, our relationship with our parents’ food is a complex one.

“Now as an adult, I get to find all of these opportunities to be proud in ways childhood didn’t let me feel proud. I can claim Filipino food as a part of my culture and celebrate the connection it creates between my mother’s identity and my own.

“I ordered some southern-style chicken adobo from a local restaurant to stir up some memories while working on the art for this Doodle, and the first thing that hit me was the smell. It was so bright and nostalgic, and instantly filled my apartment with that familiar feeling: this is exactly how things are supposed to be. So I tried to capture that simple childhood joy of leaning in and savouring the kind of food that makes home feel like home. Kain nang mabuti!”

It’s not uncommon for Google to have a Google Doodle in place of its regular blue, red, yellow and green lettering to represent a significant day in history on its homepage — but what does the March 15 image of two smiling children sniffing wafts of hot, well-seasoned chicken thighs have to do with the date?

What Is Adobo? Google Doodle Celebrates Filipino Dish

Everything Everywhere, released in March 2022, helped revitalize Art Her Theater after a two-year pandemic, earning $100 million despite initial low hopes for Oscar glory. Recorded more ticket sales. Best Actor Award went to Brendan Fraser. It's the culmination of the former action star's return to the stage with his 600-pound physical transformation. Former professor of "Whale". The Best Actor race was his one of the hottest contests of the night, but Fraser eventually overtook Austin his Butler.

“So this is what the multiverse looks like,” said a clearly moved Fraser, pointing to the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” crew.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a shock of freshness in a movie industry awash in sequels and reboots, helped Hollywood turn the page from one of the most infamous moments in Oscar history: The Slap. Jimmy Kimmel, hosting for the third time, pledged a ceremony with “no nonsense.” He said anyone who wanted to “get jiggy with it” this year would have to come through a fearsome battalion of bodyguards, including Yeoh, Steven Spielberg and his show`s “security guard” Guillermo Rodriguez.

The former child star Quan capped his own extraordinary comeback with the Oscar for best supporting actor for his performance in the indie hit “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Quan, beloved for his roles as Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and Data in “Goonies,” had all but given up acting before being cast in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

His win, among the most expected of the night, was nevertheless one of the ceremony`s most moving moments. The audience — including his “Temple of Doom” director, Steven Spielberg — gave Quan a standing ovation as he fought back tears.

“Mom, I just won an Oscar!” said Quan, 51. His family fled the war in Vietnam when he was a child.

"They say stories like this only exist in movies. I can't believe this is happening," Mr Quang said. "It's the American Dream."

minutes later, Quan's castmate Jamie Lee Curtis won the award for Best Supporting Actress. Her victory in one of the most competitive categories of the year denied comics fans victory. "Thank you to the Academy for recognizing a black female superhero," said Carter. "She perseveres, loves, overcomes, and is all the women in this film."

ABC's TV show began in the traditional way: a montage of that year's film (Top Gun: Maverick with Kimmel cut into the cockpit) and a long monologue. 's Chris Rock, who struggled to learn a lesson from the previous year's scandal where he won Best Actor. If someone attempted violence this year, Kimmel said, "I can win an Oscar for best actor and give a 19-minute speech." was not nominated for However, Sarah Polley won her Best Adapted Screenplay for her metaphor-rich Mennonite drama Women Talking.

"Thanks to the Academy for not taking offense at the words 'woman' and 'talking,'" said Pauly.

Daniel Rohr's Navalny, about the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, won the Best Documentary award. The film's triumph contained clear overtones to Navalny's continued imprisonment and Vladimir Putin's ongoing war in Ukraine.Yulia Navalnaya joined the filmmakers on stage.

"My husband is in prison for telling the truth," said Navarnaya. "Stay strong my love."

Some celebrities were absent for other reasons. Neither Tom Cruise, whose Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for Best Picture, nor Avatar: Path of Water director James Cameron, who was nominated for Best Picture, were at the ceremony. Both have been at the forefront of Hollywood's efforts to win back moviegoers after years of a pandemic. No,” Kimmel said, referring to Cruz going shirtless in “Top Gun: Maverick,” saying, “L. Ron Hubba Hubba.” . However, both "Maverick" and "Avatar" together grossed about $3.7 billion at the box office. "The Way of Water" won Best Visual Effects. "Maverick" sounded the best.

Although some categories were not awarded live at last year's Academy Awards, the Academy revived all awards for the show, relying on traditional song and dance figures. A dance with elastic suspenders from sensation RRR's "Naatu Naatu," Lady Gaga's intimate and passionate performance of "Hold My Hand" from "Top Gun: Maverick," the Super Bowl follow-up, and more. I meant some great numbers. From Rihanna. The best song is "Naatu Naatu" from "RRR".

It was also a long show. "You miss a little slap, don't you?" Kimmel said halfway through.

After last year's slap, the academy set up a crisis management team to better respond to surprise attacks. Neither Rock, who gave the most compelling testimony about the incident in a recent live special, nor Smith, who was banned from the Academy for ten years, were in attendance.

Last year, Apple TV's CODA became the first streaming movie to win Best Picture. But this year, nine of his ten films nominated for Best Picture were theatrical releases. After a drop in movie sales during the pandemic, movie attendance has recovered to around 67% of pre-pandemic levels. But it's been a year of ups and downs, a year of big wins and terrifying breaks.

Thanks to releases like 'Creed III' and 'Cocaine Bear', ticket sales have been strong this year and Sunday's show had his two guest appearances instead of one. Meanwhile, the Writers Guild and major studios are set to begin contract negotiations on March 20, a looming battle as much of the industry prepares for a possible strike.

Even Oscar wants consistency. Last year, he saw 16.6 million viewers for the show, down from an all-time low of 10.5 million, a 58% increase over the 2021 edition.

Angela Bassett ("Black Panther: Wakanda Forever") would have been the first actress to win an Oscar for a Marvel movie. Curtis is a rare Oscar winner whose parents were both Oscar-nominated.Tony Curtis was nominated for 1959's The Defiant Ones, and Janet Leigh was nominated for 1961's Psycho.

German-language World War I epic 'Silence on the Western Front' is Netflix's frontrunner of the year, picking up four awards as Academy showers honors on tragic anti-war filmmaking Did. Winners for Camera, Production Design, Film Score and Best International Film.

Bassett missed out on Best Supporting Actress, but four years after Ruth E. Carter became the first black designer to win an Oscar for "Black Panther," she designed the costumes for "Wakanda Her Forever." won the Carter is the first black woman to win two Oscars.

Analysis: Strong Daytona 500 run doesn’t quell sting for Kyle Busch

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A new era for Kyle Busch began painfully familiar — wrecking out of the Daytona 500, still unable to check the only empty box on his tremendous list of crown-jewel wins.

The two-time Cup Series champion has won about everything a driver could strive for in his 18 prior seasons — Darlington’s Southern 500, Charlotte’s Coca-Cola 600, the Brickyard 400 at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Yet the win column sits goose-egged in the “Great American Race” after 18 tries, a streak that only continued in his first regular-season race with Richard Childress Racing.

The final overtime saw Rowdy take the white flag fifth, second in the outside lane giving a hard charge to the rear bumper of Joey Logano to charge to the lead in Turn 1. But Turn 2 saw the field fly apart. Before Busch could make a move to try and win the race, he was clipped in the left-rear quarter panel and sent spinning driver-side first into the outside SAFER barrier.

The No. 8 Chevrolet paced the field for six laps Sunday night — all of them when it seemed they would matter most. Busch led Laps 197-202 in a race that was scheduled to end at Lap 200. The 65th annual season opener became the longest yet, concluding at Lap 212 thanks to two overtime finishes.

“I think this is the first time I led Lap 200,” Busch lamented. “I wish it was 1998 rules.”

In 1998, another famed black hat of the sport ended what was a 20-year pursuit of the Harley J. Earl Trophy when Dale Earnhardt Sr. wheeled Richard Childress’ No. 3 car into Victory Lane.

Twenty-five years later, the KFB fairytale nearly became reality. The nightmare continued instead.

“It’s just par for the course,” Busch said. “Just used to it, and come down here every year to just find out when and where I’m going to crash and what lap I come out of the care center.”

The first overtime restart saw Busch control the restart alongside teammate Austin Dillon. Busch ducked from high to low in an effort to link the Nos. 8 and 3 with William Byron’s No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

“It looked like it was kind of working,” Busch said, “but we got too much separation off of two, and I tried to back up to get to them. And when they hit me, it got me really squirrely, and then Austin checked up and then it just — the accordion happens, and everybody gets running over everybody.”

That triggered the wreck that led to a second overtime.

After another missed opportunity in NASCAR’s biggest spectacle, Busch was simply left soured at the infield care center.

“Who won? I don’t even know who lucked into it,” he said.

The answer: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who snagged his third career Cup victory, first Daytona 500 and first triumph since winning the 400-miler at Daytona in July 2017.

“There you have it,” Busch said.

After winning the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series championship – not to mention the 2015 edition of the “Great American Race” – Logano almost added another crown jewel to his growing Hall of Fame resume in the 65th running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. However, his late-hour push toward the front wasn’t quite enough to seal the deal in overtime, and a last-lap caution turned the outcome into a career-defining victory for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. instead, leaving Logano as the runner-up.

“Pissed off, that’s where I’m at right now, with a little bit of a smile at least,” Logano said after a quick pit-road debrief with his No. 22 Team Penske Ford group. “We finished it, which is all right, but gosh, I hate finishing second in the 500. You’re so close to winning the biggest race of the year. … What do you do? It’s over now, you move on, but we were so close to winning this thing. So proud of our team and what we’ve done from coming off the championship and carrying momentum into the season, but finishing second in the 500 in an extremely solid race is just, argh! It stings. It hurts right now.”

Logano led six times for 12 laps in a bid for his second 500 crown, and he was lined up in fourth place for the final restart, sitting behind Stenhouse on the outside lane. Three-quarters of the way through the next-to-last lap, Stenhouse gained a bit of a margin and shifted lanes, leaving Logano to lead the top side with Kyle Busch’s No. 8 Richard Childress Racing entry behind him.

Even as the only Mustang driver among the top nine — the “lone horse,” he said — Logano actually inched ahead after the white flag when Stenhouse’s No. 47 JTG-Daugherty Racing Chevrolet was forced three-wide with Kyle Larson in the middle. When Larson’s car faded heavily and spun sideways, the ensuing multi-car tangle behind the front-runners prompted a race-ending yellow flag.

“Second is the worst, man,” Logano said. “You’re so close. Leading the white-flag lap there, I was up front. Kyle (Busch) gave me a good push, and, yeah, you’re watching in the mirror, and you’re three-wide across there. I felt like the three-wide was going to hurt a lane; looked like Kyle (Larson) was getting pushed ahead, and then Ricky started getting pushed ahead.

“I knew if I went to the bottom, my car didn’t handle good enough. I already got pushed off the bottom once, and I thought, if I go down there, I’m probably going to get wrecked, and I don’t know if I can get down there in time to throw the block and so I didn’t want to wreck my car either.”

Logano came through with his No. 22 Ford largely unscathed in an eventful race where many of his fellow competitors were not as fortunate. The Sunday performance also backed up a rock-solid showing in the days leading up to the 500 – fifth-fastest in time trials, a victory in a Duel qualifying race and a third-place starting spot for the main event.

“We had the performance the whole week we’ve been down here,” No. 22 crew chief Paul Wolfe told NASCAR.com. “The Fords were fast, that was encouraging. Proud of our pit crew. We executed really well and that put us in position there at the end really to get the lead. Gosh, it’s just so hard to get through one of these races clean and to be that dang close. It just stings right now. Typically, second’s a good run but it just doesn’t feel like it right now for everything it took to get ourselves here.”

While the result was bittersweet, Logano made it a priority to give credit where credit was due and offer his congratulations in his televised interview, saying from experience, “There’s nothing like winning the Daytona 500.”

Even with the video review of the finish indicating a clear victory for Stenhouse, Logano mostly kept his foot on the gas on his way back to the start-finish line for the final time. He actually edged ahead of Stenhouse’s No. 47 to take the checkered flag and yellow flag first – an action that briefly and incorrectly put his No. 22 atop the scoring pylon before the accurate finishing order was listed.

“I was in denial,” Logano said with a laugh. “I still am.”

Signs Point to Rising Recession Risk

Signs Point to Rising Recession Risk, Recession fear has risen swiftly this year. Inflation is rising at its fastest pace in decades, the Federal Reserve has begun what is expected to be an aggressive rate-hike cycle, global supply-chain problems persist, and the Russia-Ukraine war has upended commodity markets. All this has driven a rise in market volatility and fear of a coming economic downturn. We think the risk of a recession—sooner rather than later—has picked up. Intense market volatility, sour consumer confidence, and downward pressure on income growth all point to an economy that is slowing down. U.S. gross domestic product growth (GDP) contracted at a 1.5% annualized rate in the first quarter of 2022 (note that early GDP data is always subject to revision in later quarters). That was the first decline since the second quarter of 2020. While the trade and inventory components were largely responsible for the negative figure, the trend in consumer spending (which makes up about 70% of the U.S. economy) slowed throughout the quarter.

What a recession is (and isn't)

This is a good time to remind investors that a U.S. recession is not—and has never been—defined as two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. In fact, the 2001 recession only saw one quarterly GDP contraction; also, despite GDP contracting for two consecutive quarters in the mid-to-late-1940s, there was no recession. So the contraction in first-quarter 2022 GDP doesn't necessarily mean a recession is beginning. The official arbiter of U.S. recessions is the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), which defines recession as "a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and that lasts more than a few months." The four primary components that the NBER looks at to determine whether the United States is in a recession are—not coincidentally—the four indicators that make up The Conference Board’s Coincident Economic Index (CEI):

◉ real personal income less transfer payments;
◉ nonfarm payroll employment;
◉ wholesale and retail sales;
◉ and industrial production.

As you can see in the chart below, the CEI tends to track the business cycle in real time, peaking at the start of recessions and finding a trough at the end of them.

Coincident Economic Index

Recessions are not a matter of "if" but simply a matter of "when." News media often portray them as a catastrophe, but the reality is every economic cycle ends in a recession, allowing any excesses to be wrung out and thus making way for the start of a new cycle. To be sure, investors' muscle memory of the past couple recessions paints them in a rather unpleasant light: Both the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the global financial crisis in 2007-2008 sent shockwaves throughout world asset markets and spawned multiple, lasting crises (different in nature, of course).

Barring some exogenous, unexpected event that sends yet another shock through the global system, we think the next recession will be a bit more (for lack of a better term) natural: The Fed hikes rates—sometimes aggressively—to combat inflation and/or growth that’s overheating, unemployment increases, the labor market weakens, incomes fall, and overall growth slows.

Look to the leaders

At any point in the cycle—and especially when a recession is on the horizon—it is useful to analyze leading economic indicators for clues as to where the economy is headed. The Leading Economic Index (LEI) from The Conference Board is an amalgamation of key indicators that move in advance of the business cycle. Covering the labor market, stock prices, and consumer/business confidence, among others, the LEI’s level and trend are perhaps the best indications of both the strength and durability of the phases of the cycle. Whenever discussing the LEI, we always like to remind investors that the indicators' trends are just as important—if not more important—than their levels. Individual components shouldn't be looked at in isolation, and their strength in level terms often isn't enough for a comprehensive analysis of inflection points, even in the run-up to recessions. As an example, below are snapshots of the LEI's level and trend in the months prior to the start of the 2020, 2007, and 2001 recessions.

Starting with the pandemic-driven recession in 2020, you can see in the first table below that most indicators were at either strong or fair levels. Given the rapidity with which the virus drove the world into a recession, trends within the LEI's components were not particularly weak—but to be sure, there was more red and yellow in the trend column vs. the level column.

2020 recession

Moving to the recession that started in 2007—famously sparked by the bursting of the subprime mortgage bubble—you can see below that trends were in worse shape—and unsurprisingly, housing activity (as reflected in building permits) had already started to weaken considerably. It was the labor and business spending areas that took a bit longer to catch up.

2007 recession

Meanwhile, prior to the 2001 recession, the LEI's trend column was almost a complete sea of red, as you can see in the table below. Not only that, but even the levels were in rough shape, with only building permits showing any degree of strength. Arguably, the chief reason for the souring economic data in advance of the start of the recession was the collapse in the stock market, courtesy of the bursting of the tech and telecom bubble that started in March 2000. From the peak in March 2000 through February 2001, the S&P 500 was down 17% and the Nasdaq was down 57% (of course, suffering even greater drawdowns until late 2002). Given households' historic exposure to stocks at the time, hits to confidence through the asset market channel were large enough to help accelerate the economy’s downturn.

2001 recession

nseparable A market-driven downturn has the potential to take shape, mostly due to the near-historic interconnectedness between the economy and the stock market. As you can see in the chart below, the value of corporate equities relative to U.S. GDP (known as the "Buffett Indicator" given its historical status as one of investor Warren Buffett's favorite valuation metrics) is well over 200%, slightly off its all-time high but incredibly stretched relative to history.

Stocks tied to the economy

The Buffett indicator—along with other valuation metrics—is often used to argue that stocks are egregiously overvalued and due for an imminent downturn, particularly by market watchers who are bearish to begin with. While the drop in valuations and weak performance this year have confirmed both assertions, we'd emphasize that there is more to glean from looking at households' exposure to the overall stock market. Put simply, given the Buffett Indicator's 200%-plus reading and households' outsized exposure to equities, there is a heightened degree of risk that if the bear market is deep and long-lasting, it may deal a greater hit to the economy by discouraging consumer confidence and spending.

It also doesn't bode well for stock market performance. As you can see in the chart below, high allocations to stocks (at extremes) historically have tended to lead to weak returns in the subsequent 10 years (shown by the yellow line).

Indexes are unmanaged, do not incur management fees, costs and expenses, and cannot be invested in directly. Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Of course, one indicator isn't the sole determinant or predictor of the path stocks end up taking, but investors should note that both the market and economy face an increasingly steep uphill climb in the near term. Fiscal and monetary policy are no longer stimulative, the world continues to struggle from rising interest rates and supply shocks, and pervasive inflation is actively denting income growth and spending power.

Perpetual motion

Along with the strength in the aforementioned leading indicators, investors should continue to take note of the energy sphere, as the spike in commodity prices this year has been consistent with prior recessions. As you can see in the chart below, inflation-adjusted crude oil prices have climbed well beyond their 24-month moving average; going back to the early-1970s, it's been quite common for a recession to follow such a price rise. Only once (in August 2005) did the change move above 50% without a recession on its way (or already underway).

Recession-like oil spike

Y-axis is truncated for visual purposes; the actual peak was 242%.

Energy spending as a share of overall U.S. consumption has waned over time, but the unfortunate reality is that higher oil and gasoline prices act as a regressive tax—especially for those on the lower end of the wealth and income spectrum. At a time when inflation is running hot and asset markets are under pressure, a jump in commodity prices can depress consumer confidence and lead to lowe

In sum

Despite the drop in consumer confidence and bearishness across survey data, consumer spending has held up so far this year, and the broader economy remains on solid footing in level terms. However, trends among leading economic indicators are crucial to watch, especially when approaching inflection points in the cycle. Put another way, we'll emphasize our oft-used phrase: When it comes to the relationship between the stock market and economic data, "better" or "worse" tend to matter more than "good" or "bad."
