St. Etienne fans throw flares onto pitch before Ligue 1 match vs. Angers

St. Etienne fans throw flares onto pitch 10/22/2021
Friday night's Ligue 1 soccer match between St. Etienne and visiting Angers was delayed as fans threw flares onto the pitch.

It happened prior to the start of the match as the players were warming up.  The home fans were calling for manager Claude Puel to resign as St. Etienne started the season winless after 10 matches, putting them at the bottom of Ligue 1.  The delay lasted nearly an hour.

As for the match, St. Etienne was able to rally from a two goal deficit and pull out a 2-2 draw on a header from defender Mickael Nade in the fourth minute of stoppage time.  However, they remain winless and will likely need some drastic changes to salvage their season.

Dog runs on pitch, interrupts Swiss Super League soccer match

Sunday's Swiss Super League soccer match between FC Zurich and Zion was briefly interrupted when a dog ran onto the pitch.

It happened during the 40th minute of the match with the score tied at 1-1. With the game action taking place towards the middle of the field, a white dog ran in from the sideline and towards the corner of the field, where it found a spot to stop and look around for a while. A man ran down from the stands and was able to get the dog's attention to lure it off the field.

We have seen our share of animals interrupting sporting events, consisting of different animals and covering several sports. There isn't much that can be done about wild animals, but why are people bringing their cats and dogs to the games? Our advice: leave the pets at home.

Overall, the delay lasted for less than a minute, but it provided the players and officials with a comedy break. Neither team scored another goal in the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle midfielder Matt Ritchie calls referee a 'wee dick'

In Premier League soccer action, Newcastle United FC midfielder Matt Ritchie dressed down a referee during Monday's match against Brighton by calling him a "wee dick".

It happened in the 14th minute of the game as Ritchie was called for a foul as he appeared to take down a Brighton player near the sideline. With no fans in the stands, microphones at field level clearly picked up on Ritchie's frustration with the call.

With many pro sports playing in front of empty stadiums for the foreseeable future, there could be a lot more awkward moments like this over the days and weeks to come. Let this be a lesson for Ritchie, and hopefully he can treat the officials a little nicer next time.

Will Ferrell gives wacky interview during halftime of LAFC vs LA Galaxy

LAFC co-owner Will Ferrell held an interview with ESPN during halftime of Saturday night's MLS is Back Tournament matchup against cross-town rival LA Galaxy in the latest iteration of El Trafico, and things got a bit wacky.

The game was tied at 2-2 at halftime as Ferrell joined the ESPN studio crew from his home sporting an LAFC facemask and some extremely frizzy hair. Ferrell claimed that LAFC scored each time he put on his "Talledaga Nights" racing helmet to bring the team luck. As Ferrell answered some other questions about the quarantine and how he watches soccer games, a large group of kids popped up in the background eating cereal and corn on the cob.

Things got really strange when the ESPN studio crew asked Ferrell if he eats corn on the cob with the helmet on and whether it was white or yellow corn. Ferrell said that it would typically be yellow corn and he would take the helmet off to eat it. When asked who the "minions" behind him who were eating so much corn, after several seconds of dead silence, Ferrell claimed to have no idea what they were talking about.

We're guessing that Ferrell wore the helmet for most of the second half, as LAFC broke the game open with four goals to defeat the LA Galaxy 6-2.

Unai Bustinza tackles Leo Messi rugby-style

Leo Messi tackled by Unai Bustinza FC Barcelona vs CD Leganes La Liga 6/16/2020

FC Barcelona superstar forward Leo Messi was taken down with a rugby-style tackle by CD Leganes defender Unai Bustinza during the first half of their La Liga match Tuesday.

It happened in the 37th minute as Messi turned on the speed in an attempt to dribble around Bustinza.  Messi nearly turned the corner for a breakaway up the sideline when Bustinza wrapped his arms around him and brought him down to the ground.

Now that's an impressive tackle.  There might be an NFL team out there that could take advantage of Bustinza's raw talent. Unfortunately, tackling is not allowed in soccer, so instead, Bustinza received a yellow card.

Messi was unhurt on the play, and he got a measure of revenge later in the match by converting a penalty kick in the 69th minute.  Barcelona come away with the 2-0 victory.
