Joe Thornton spears Boris Katchouk in groin

Joe Thornton spears Boris Katchouk in groin, Panthers vs. Lightning, 10/19/2021

Florida Panthers center Joe Thornton speared Tampa Bay Lightning left winger Boris Katchouk in the groin during Tuesday night's NHL game at the Amalie Arena.

It happened with just under five minutes remaining in the first period with no score. As Thornton and several other players on both teams battled for the puck along the boards in front of the Panthers bench, Katchouk came along and checked Thornton in the back. Thornton responded by spearing Katchouk in the crotch.

Play was stopped as Katchouk went down in pain and stayed down for several seconds before slowly getting up and skating off the ice. Thornton received a two minute slashing penalty. He may have felt justified in retaliating, but as they say, it's always the second guy that gets caught.

The Panthers beat the Lightning 4-1 and remain undefeated after three games.  The back-to-back Stanley Cup champions fell to 2-2 on the season.

Matthew Tkachuk penalized for batting puck out of midair from bench

Matthew Tkachuk bats puck out of midair, Ducks vs Flames, 10/18/2021
Calgary Flames right winger Matthew Tkachuk was penalized for a bizarre play he made from the bench during Monday night's game against Anaheim.

It happened with just under six minutes remaining in the first period as the Flames held a 1-0 lead. Flames center Mikael Backlund hit the puck high across the ice and it appeared that it was going over the glass and out of play above the Flames bench. However, for some reason, Tkachuk stood up and used his stick to knock the puck back onto the ice.

It was a strange play to watch, and it was unclear to everyone why Tkachuk did that. Given that the puck was going out of play, the referees blew the whistle to stop play anyway, so it was a wasted effort by Tkachuk. Making matters worse, the referees sent Tkachuk to the penalty box for two minutes for interference.

Rasmus Andersson elbows, headbutts Kailer Yamamoto during Flames-Oilers scrum

Rasmus Andersson roughs up Kailer Yamamoto, Flames vs Oilers, 10/16/2021
Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson delivered a headbutt and an elbow to the face of Edmonton Oilers right winger Kailer Yamamoto during Saturday night's NHL game at Rogers Place.

It happened in the first period with the Oilers holding a 1-0 lead. Yamamoto charged the Flames net and took a shot from close range, then followed through with contact on goaltender Jacob Markstrom in an attempt to knock the puck into the net as the whistle blew to stop play. The extra contact set off Andersson, who elbowed Yamamoto in the face and threw him against the boards before delivering the headbutt.

Andersson managed to throw a few punches to Yamamoto's face as a linesman got in between them to stop the scrum and separate the players. He definitely got the better end of this one. Andersson was sent to the penalty box and received a double minor penalty on the play for roughing and elbowing.

Yamamoto and the Oilers got the last laugh, however, as the Oilers beat the Flames 5-2

Shea Weber slashes Nikita Kucherov, gets away with it

Shea Weber lines up to slash Nikita Kucherov, Canadiens vs Lightning, 2021 Stanley Cup Final Game 1, 6/28/2021

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber slashed Tampa Bay Lightning right winger Nikita Kucherov during the late stages of Monday night's opening game of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final at Amalie Arena.

It happened with under four minutes left in the third period with the Lightning holding a 4-1 lead. Kucherov took the pass across the Canadiens blue line, delivered a pass to a teammate and was attempting to position himself in the corner of the ice.  With Kucherov not looking, Weber took his stick and whacked him in the back of his left knee.

Kucherov went down, but got up relatively quickly and continued playing.  Weber did not receive a penalty, despite an official being in position behind the net, seemingly in a good position to see the play.  Unfortunately, we cannot identify the official from the video, but they deserve to be called out for missing this one.

Kucherov got the last laugh, however, as two minutes later he delivered an assist to Steven Stamkos on a power play goal to close out a 5-1 victory and give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. Kucherov had already contributed two goals, both in the third period.

Brayden McNabb destroys Nick Suzuki with monster open ice hit

Brayden McNabb destroys Nick Suzuki, Canadiens vs Golden Knights, Game 3 NHL WCF, 6/18/2021

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb obliterated Montreal Canadiens center Nick Suzuki with a tremendous open ice hit during Friday night's Game 3 of the NHL Western Conference Finals at the T-Mobile Arena.

It happened during the opening moments of the second period with the game still scoreless. Suzuki took a pass and skated towards the red line with the puck as McNabb lined him up and laid him out.

It was a clean hit. Suzuki appeared to be OK as he got right back up, found his stick, and continued playing.

Suzuki's teammate Shea Weber retaliated on his behalf by knocking McNabb down to the ice in front of the referees. Since the hit happened nowhere near the puck, Weber was given a two minute penalty for interference.

Suzuki and Weber got the last laugh, however, as the Canadiens beat the Golden Knights 3-2 to take a 2-1 series lead.

Chandler Stephenson ejected for elbowing Tobias Bjornfot in face

Vegas Golden Knights center Chandler Stephenson was ejected from Wednesday night's game against Los Angeles for elbowing Kings defenseman Tobias Bjornfot in the face.

It happened late in the second period with the Kings winning 4-1.  Bjornfot was first to the puck along the boards in the corner of the Kings zone with Stephenson lining him up for the hit.  Bjornfot passed the puck around the boards behind the Kings net before Stephenson got there, but Stephenson couldn't resist the opportunity to knock Bjornfot into the boards with a high elbow to the face.

Bjornfot went down to his knees, clearly dazed and play was stopped.  Bjornfot was spitting blood as he slowly made his way off the ice and headed straight to the locker room.

As for Stephenson, he was immediately sent to the penalty box with a five-minute elbowing penalty, and then given a game misconduct after the officials reviewed the play.  Stephenson is likely to receive a suspension once the NHL Department of Player Safety takes a look at this.

Jack Hughes falls down on breakaway vs. Flyers

New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes suffered an embarrassing mishap at the worst possible moment during Tuesday night's game in Philadelphia.

It happened in the second period with the Devils holding a 3-1 lead. Hughes found himself behind the Flyers defense as the Devils stopped the Flyers on the defensive end and passed the puck right to him. Hughes had nobody between himself and goaltender Carter Hart, but inexplicably lost his footing and fell down, wasting the breakaway opportunity.

Hughes probably wishes he could have a do-over on that one.  Fortunately, his teammates had his back as the Devils held on for a 4-3 win.

Jonathan Marchessault cross-checks Radim Simek and gets away with it

Vegas Golden Knights center Jonathan Marchessault got away with a cross-check on San Jose Sharks defenseman Radim Simek during Saturday night's NHL game at the SAP Center at San Jose.

It happened early in the second period as the Golden Knights held a 1-0 lead on a goal scored by Marchessault in the first period. Simek had just chased down the puck in the corner on the Sharks defensive end, knocking Golden Knights right winger Reilly Smith off his feet with a hard check. However, as Simek took the puck behind the Sharks net, Marchessault knocked Simek hard into the boards.

Simek seemed to be in pain for a moment as he stopped to grab his head, but quickly shook off the cobwebs to resume play. However, Simek found himself down on the ice moments later as he tried to knock the puck out of the corner when Marchessault knocked him into the boards again, this time with a cross-check.

No penalty was called on Marchessault, but there probably should have been based on the video. Radim left the game and did not return. As of this writing, the specifics of his injury has not been disclosed.

Antoine Roussel gets misconduct penalty for chirping at and hugging opponent

Antoine Roussel chirps with Ryan Reeves, Canucks vs Golden Knights 8/23/2020

Vancouver Canucks left winger Antoine Roussel was given a surprising misconduct penalty during Sunday's Game 1 of their NHL Western Conference second round playoff series against Vegas.

It happened in the third period with the Golden Knights holding a 4-0 lead. During a play stoppage, Roussel got into a chirping match with Golden Knights right winger Ryan Reeves. Roussel playfully poked Reeves while chirping with him, then gave Reeves a "hug" while continuing to taunt him in his ear.

The referees separated the players, but then shocked everyone by sending Roussel to the penalty box for 10 minutes.

Seriously? The officials called this a misconduct penalty? This is a horrible job. Come on, refs, this is playoff hockey. Let them play.

Reeves got the last laugh over Roussel as the Golden Knights dominated the Canucks for the 5-0 victory.

Nick Ritchie loses tooth during scrum, Bruins vs Lightning 8/5/2020

Boston Bruins left winger Nick Ritchie made sure to do everything in his power to get his tooth back after losing it during a scrum in Wednesday night's NHL Eastern Conference round robin qualifier game against Tampa Bay.

It happened just before the end of the second period as Ritchie and Bruins forward Anders Bjork teamed up to check Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh into the boards, with Ritchie checking McDonagh from behind. McDonagh got up and punched Ritchie, knocking his tooth out. After the scrum was broken up, Ritchie realized his tooth was missing, but he was guided towards the locker room by an official before he had a chance to find it.

The tooth remained on the ice, but Ritchie came back out with Bruins backup goaltender Jaroslav Halak while the zamboni was out on the ice during the second intermission.

Ritchie was fortunate enough to get his tooth back, but the Bruins lost the game 3-2.

Elias Pettersson clocks Ryan Hartman, Canucks vs Wild 8/4/2020

Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson knocked Minnesota Wild right winger Ryan Hartman out of Tuesday's Game 2 of their NHL Western Conference Qualifier with a shot to the back of the head.

It happened with just over three minutes left in the third period as Hartman and Pettersson were chasing the puck in the Wild zone along the boards. Tucker Poolman blocks shot with his face vs Flames

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Trevor Poolman blocks shot with his face vs Calgary Flames 8/4/2020

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Tucker Poolman took a puck to the face as he sacrificed himself to block a shot during Tuesday's Game 3 of their NHL Western Conference Qualifier series against Calgary.

It happened in the second period as Flames center Mikael Backlund lined up for a shot on the Jets goal from point blank range. As Poolman fearlessly dropped down to the ice and slid in front of the puck, Backlund attempted to lift the puck with a wrist shot over Poolman. The puck hit Poolman square in the face.

Poolman was taken off the ice and straight to the locker room, with a trail of blood following him. More proof that hockey players are some of the toughest athletes in the world.

It was that kind of game for the Jets as they were beat up by the Flames 6-2. Calgary took a 2-1 lead in the series.

Kyle Clifford destroys Dean Kukan with huge hit, Blue Jackets vs Maple Leafs Game 2, 8/4/2020

Toronto Maple Leafs left winger Kyle Clifford destroyed Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Dean Kukan with a bone-crushing hit during Tuesday's Game 2 of their NHL Eastern Conference Qualifier series.

It happened just two minutes into the first period as the puck was dumped into the Blue Jackets zone. Kukan took control of the puck and avoided a check attempt by Maple Leafs right winger Kasperi Kapanen, but let the puck get a bit too far ahead of him. Kukan chased the puck down and was able to pass it to a teammate as Clifford was lining him up for the big hit. Clifford launched himself into Kukan and absolutely crushed him.

No penalty was called. Kukan was slow to get up and headed to the locker room after ending his shift. He did return briefly later in the game, but finished with only seven and a half minutes of ice time.

It was that kind of game for the Blue Jackets as the Maple Leafs won the game 3-0 to even the series at one game apiece.

Penguins get caught with 10 men on the ice vs Flyers

The Pittsburgh Penguins were rusty as they played Tuesday's NHL exhibition game against the rival Philadelphia Flyers, and it showed as they were given a penalty for having too many men on the ice. Normally teams have six men on the ice at one time, but the Penguins were caught with ten men.

It happened midway through the second period as the Penguins made a very sloppy line change. The fresh players were quick to leave the bench, but the players at the end of their shift were slow to get off, resulting in a moment with ten Penguins on the ice at the same time.

There was no way the officials were going to miss that one. They should have sent at least two Penguins to the penalty box for that one. Granted that this was a practice game of sorts, but the Penguins need to step things up a bit if they're planning on making a run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

As it happened, the Flyers beat the Penguins 3-2 in overtime.

Snoop Dogg returns to LA Kings broadcast booth for '90s Night'

Snoop Dogg joins LA Kings broadcast 2/22/2020

Rapper Snoop Dogg joined the Los Angeles Kings television broadcast booth to bring his unique perspective to Saturday night's game against Colorado.

In January 2019, Snoop joined the Kings broadcast team of Alex Faust and Jim Fox for a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and received rave reviews. It was only a matter of time before he received an invite back, and with the Kings holding "90s Night", it was the perfect opportunity. Snoop was decked out in full Kings gear, with a black Kings cap and white Kings jacket.

Snoop was hyping a new clothing store called "Snoopy's" which he's opening in Inglewood across from the new stadium where the Rams and Chargers will be playing. He also has an electronic gaming cafe that he is opening up for a younger generation of gamers.

Snoop also revealed that he will be in the new EA Sports NHL hockey game. Players will have the choice of having Snoop announcing the game for them. That would be fun. It's amazing how his appearance at one hockey game has opened so many new doors for him.

To top off a fun night for Snoop, Kings coach Todd McClellan invited him into the locker room prior to the game to reveal the team's starting lineup. Naturally, Snoop brought some of his trademark style for the announcements:

  • "Drew Doughty - no doubt."
  • "Up front, we gonna have Anze Kopitar - cuz you got the coke, you understand me?"
  • "19 - Alex I-follow (Iafollo) - do your job."
  • "Dustin Get-Down Brown - you know what time it is."
  • "In the back, we got Jonathan Quick, like quick to gettin' yo' ass."

The Kings loved it, and Faust and Fox had a blast as they did last year. Unfortunately, Snoop's presence didn't bring luck to the Kings, as they lost to the Avs 2-1 in a shootout.

Leon Draisaitl scores as puck takes crazy bounce off opponent's skate (Video)

Edmonton Oilers center Leon Draisaitl scores off crazy bounce 2/21/2020

Edmonton Oilers center Leon Draisaitl scored a goal with the help of the strangest bounce you will ever see during Friday night's game against Minnesota.

It happened in the second period with the score tied at 2. The Oilers won the faceoff in the Wild zone, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins taking the puck and passing it back to Matthew Benning at the point. Benning shot the puck wide and it bounced along the boards and around the back of the net to Draisaitl. Draisaitl tried to center it and the puck hit the heel of the skate of Wild left winger Jordan Greenway, who was skating back up the ice the other way. The puck deflected backwards and into the air, fooling everyone, especially goaltender Alex Stalock, as the puck found its way into the back of the net.

You don't see that every day.

Unfortunately, Draisaitl's goal would be the last for the Oilers in the game, as the Wild followed up with three goals (all scored by Jared Spurgeon) to give Minnesota the 5-3 road victory.

Robert Thomas spears helmet off head of Nick Merkley Blues vs Devils 2/18/2020

St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas accidentally pulled the helmet off the head of New Jersey Devils right winger Nick Merkley during Tuesday night's game at the Enterprise Center.

It happened in the third period with the Blues holding a 2-0 lead. Thomas was in control of the puck behind his old blue line with Merkley coming across the ice for the check. Thomas sent the puck up the boards and braced for the collision, but in the process, his stick came up and got caught in the earhole of Merkley's helmet. The stick went through the earhole and yanked the hemlet off Merkley's head.

Merkley appeared to be cut and came off the ice. Play was stopped, and Thomas received a four-minute penalty for high sticking. Merkley did not return to the game.

The Blues beat the Devils 3-0.

Alex Ovechkin checks Nate Schmidt into Golden Knights bench

Alex Ovechkin checks Nate Schmidt into Golden Knights bench 2/17/2020

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin checked Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt right into his own bench during Monday night's game at the T-Mobile Arena.

It happened with a little over six minutes remaining in the first period. Schmidt skated over to the boards in front of his bench to keep the puck away from Ovechkin as he chased after it. Schmidt knocked the puck away, but Ovechkin drilled him and flipped him over the boards in the process.

Ovechkin had to shield his face from Schmidt's skate blade as he fell into the bench. That was a bit too close.

Schmidt got a good laugh about it once he made it back on the ice. He is a former teammate of Ovechkin, having been a member of the Capitals for four seasons, so no hard feelings there. The television commentators got a good laugh as well, calling it an "involuntary line change" for Schmidt.

In the end, Schmidt had the last laugh as the Golden Knights beat the Capitals 3-2
