Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin checked Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt right into his own bench during Monday night's game at the T-Mobile Arena.
It happened with a little over six minutes remaining in the first period. Schmidt skated over to the boards in front of his bench to keep the puck away from Ovechkin as he chased after it. Schmidt knocked the puck away, but Ovechkin drilled him and flipped him over the boards in the process.
Ovechkin had to shield his face from Schmidt's skate blade as he fell into the bench. That was a bit too close.
Schmidt got a good laugh about it once he made it back on the ice. He is a former teammate of Ovechkin, having been a member of the Capitals for four seasons, so no hard feelings there. The television commentators got a good laugh as well, calling it an "involuntary line change" for Schmidt.
In the end, Schmidt had the last laugh as the Golden Knights beat the Capitals 3-2
