Conor McGregor throws wild first pitch at Cubs game

Conor McGregor throws wild first pitch at Chicago Cubs game 9/21/2021
Conor McGregor may have built a superstar career with his mixed martial arts skills, but he's not perfect. His baseball skills could use a little work.

McGregor was invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch at Wrigley Field prior to Tuesday night's Chicago Cubs game against Minnesota. McGregor came out to the mound dressed in a suit and ready to put on a show for the crowd. Unfortunately, his pitching ability is not on the same level as his MMA expertise. To say McGregor threw a wild pitch would be an understatement. With nearly a dozen cameras filming from close range, his pitch was high and WAY wide of home plate, hitting the short wall of the backstop. As bad as McGregor's pitch was, however, it certainly was not the worst first pitch we've ever seen. Some celebrities have thrown a lot worse. Carly Rae Jepsen comes to mind. And of course, there was 50 Cent.

Young Yankees fan gives away foul ball

A young New York Yankees fan gave away a foul ball during Friday night's game in the Bronx against Cleveland.

It happened in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Yankees holding a 2-0 lead. After Yankees batter Gleyber Torres hit a foul ball into the rolled-up tarp on the third base side of the field, a ball boy tossed the ball over the netting into the stands. A woman in the front row was unable to catch the ball, allowing a boy from a few rows back to reach over the second row of seats and grab the ball. However, since he already had a baseball of his own, he gave the ball to the woman in the front row.

This kid deserves all the kudos that come his way. He could have been greedy and kept the ball, but he did the right thing. As Yankees TV announcer Michael Kay stated, "That kid has been raised well."

We know the boy went home happy as the Yankees beat the Indians 8-0

Joc Pederson closes out Braves win with incredible catch

Joc Pederson incredible catch Braves vs Giants, 8/27/2021

Atlanta Braves right fielder Joc Pederson wrapped up Friday night's 6-5 victory over the visiting San Francisco Giants with an incredible catch on the warning track to end the game.

It happened in the top of the ninth with two outs and nobody on as Giants batter Tommy LaStella hit a 1-1 fastball deep to right field. Pederson ran to the warning track, leaped against the outfield wall, reached behind his back and made the catch. He bounced off the wall and fell on his back, but held onto the ball for the final out to end the game.

Pederson's clutch play pumped up the hometown fans, and the victory allowed the Braves to keep their 5 1/2 game lead in the National League East division.

Rays starter Rich Hill smashes dugout bench with bat vs. Nationals

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Rich Hill smashes dugout bench with bat vs Nationals, 6/29/2021

Tampa Bay Rays starter Rich Hill lost his cool and had a bit of a temper tantrum in the Rays dugout during Tuesday night's game in Washington.

It happened after Hill had been tagged by the Nationals for four runs in the first two innings, putting the Rays in a 4-0 hole. After returning to the Rays dugout at the end of the second inning, Hill vented his frustration by slamming his glove twice on the dugout bench and screaming something, then taking his cap and throwing it down. Hill wasn't finished, however, as he picked up a baseball bat and slammed the dugout bench a few times for good measure.

Hill had to get himself composed pretty quickly, because as luck would have it, he was due to lead off in the top of the third. He managed to reach first on a bunt single to the catcher and made it to second base on a throwing error, then advanced to third on a fielder's choice, but wasn't able to score a run.

As things played out, the outburst may have been just what Hill needed to turn things around, as he pitched four more innings without giving up a run.  Unfortunately, the Rays weren't able to put together enough offense to dig out of the deficit, so Hill had to take the loss as the Nationals beat the Rays 4-3.

Dylan Bundy vomits on mound, leaves game vs. Yankees

Dylan Bundy vomits on mound, Angels vs Yankees, 6/28/2021

Los Angeles Angels starter Dylan Bundy left Monday night's game early against the New York Yankees due to heat exhaustion, which was readily apparent after he vomited on the mound.

It happened in the bottom of the second inning with two outs and a runner on second base and the score tied at 2-2. Bundy had thrown 43 pitches in 90-degree heat and high humidity as he was preparing to face Yankees batter DJ LeMahieu. Bundy's cap was pouring with sweat as he took a few steps behind the rubber, hunched over and lost his lunch. An Angels trainer quickly came out to tend to Bundy, with manager Joe Maddon following close behind. It was obvious that Bundy could not continue, so the Angels wasted no time in removing him from the game and getting him some treatment. Bundy was replaced by Jose Suarez, who got LeMahieu to ground out to end the inning.

Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant had a front row seat to see it all unfold:
We genuinely hope Bundy is OK, as that was tough to watch.

Fernando Tatis Jr. loses track of count, thinks he walked on 2-2 pitch

Fernando Tatis Jr. loses track of count, D-backs vs Padres, 6/25/2021
San Diego Padres superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was caught losing track of the count during Friday's game against Arizona.

It happened during his at-bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. As the 2-2 pitch from D-backs reliever Matt Peacock came in a bit inside, Tatis was ready to toss his bat aside as he began to walk towards first base.

Fortunately, he quickly realized that the pitch was not ball four, so he smoothly walked backwards to home plate as if he knew all along that the count was 3-2.

Tatis ended up grounding out to shortstop in the at-bat. However, Padres fans were more than willing to forgive Tatis Jr. for his counting mishap, considering that he had already hit 3 home runs (and a single) in the game with 4 RBIs. Tatis finished the game 4-for-5 as the Padres beat the Diamondbacks 11-5

Nathan Eovaldi switches jerseys midgame vs. Yankees

Nathan Eovaldi changes jerseys Red Sox vs Yankees 6/4/2021

Boston Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi switched jerseys in the middle of Friday night's game in the Bronx against the New York Yankees.

It happened in the bottom of the fifth inning as Eovaldi came out to the mound wearing the special Red Sox Memorial Day jersey featuring a patch of a flower with the phrase "Lest We Forget". He started the game with the standard Red Sox jersey. It did not go unnoticed by television commentators.

What makes this even more curious is that it is not the first time that Eovaldi has changed jerseys midgame. The last time it happened (last July), it was a wardrobe accident that was even more noticeable since he pitched wearing a teammate's jersey.  This time around, it seemed to be an intentional uniform top change, and fortunately it had the right name on the back.

The jersey switch didn't seem to have a negative effect on Eovaldi, as he only gave up one earned run in six innings while striking out seven as he earned the 5-2 victory.

Luis Robert misplays pop fly, ball bounces off his head

Luis Robert misplays pop fly, ball bounces off his head, White Sox vs Angels 4/3/2021

Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert suffered an embarrassing (and probably painful) mishap during Saturday night's game against the L.A. Angels when he misplayed a pop fly that bounced off his head.

It happened in the bottom of the third inning with two outs and an Angels runner on first as the White Sox held a 1-0 lead. Angels batter Anthony Rendon hit a pop fly to short center field which looked like it would end the inning. White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson was called off by Robert as he came in from center field to grab it. However, things came off the rails for the White Sox as Rendon adjusted his path to the ball at the last second and somehow missed it. The ball bounced off Robert's head and towards right field.

As right fielder Adam Eaton picked up the ball, Angels runner David Fletcher rounded third and headed home. Eaton's throw to the plate hit the pitcher's mound and bounced over catcher Zack Collins' head and towards the backstop, allowing Rendon to reach second easily.

Robert and Eaton were both charged with errors on the play. Rendon came around to score as the next Angels batter hit a single to knock him home, giving the Angels a 2-1 lead.

Robert was not seriously hurt and stayed in the game, batting 2-for-4 with an RBI. However, his misplay was costly as the Angels beat the White Sox 5-3.  Just goes to show that major leaguers have tough days in the field, too.

Cat sneaks onto Coors Field, interrupts Rockies-Dodgers game

Friday night's Colorado Rockies game against the visiting L.A. Dodgers was interrupted briefly as a cat ran across Coors Field.

It happened in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out as the Dodgers led the Rockies 11-6. Rockies batter Ryan McMahon was at the plate waiting for the 1-2 pitch when the cat snuck onto the field somewhere near the Dodgers dugout and ran all the way into the outfield, when it finally stopped to catch its breath.

The cat began running again but changed direction when it saw security coming for it.  The cat tried to outrun security along the warning track, but was unable to do so.

Unfortunately, the cat did not bring good luck to the Rockies, as they were unable to score any more runs, allowing the Dodgers to earn the 11-6 victory.

Gerrit Cole loses track of outs on Opening Day vs. Blue Jays

New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole had an embarrassing moment early in Thursday's Opening Day game against Toronto when he lost track of the outs while on the mound.

It happened in the top of the second inning as Cole had runners on first and second with one out after giving up three singles and a run in the inning. On a 3-2 pitch, Cole got Blue Jays batter Randal Grichuk to swing and miss on a slider low and outside for strike three. Cole began to walk towards the Yankees dugout, but quickly realized that the strikeout was only the second out of the inning.

Cole made his way back to the mound and struck out the next batter for the third out to end the inning.  He gave up two runs on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, but left the game with the score tied at 2-2 so did not get a decision.  The Yankees lost to the Blue Jays 3-2 in 10 innings.

Miguel Cabrera hits HR, slides into second base vs. Indians

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was involved in a funny moment during Thursday's Opening Day game against Cleveland when he slid into second base after hitting a home run.

It happened in the bottom of the first with two outs and a runner on first in a scoreless game. With the count at 1-1, Cabrera hit a 92 mph fastball off Indians pitcher Shane Bieber into the right field seats. However, given that the game was being played in the middle of a snowstorm and the ball bounced off the railing above the fence and back onto the field, Cabrera slid into second base thinking he only had a double.

It was pretty funny to see, but understandable given the circumstances. The second base umpire notified Cabrera that he had in fact hit a homer, and Cabrera continued jogging the bases until he reached home plate to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Cabrera gets credit for the first home run of the 2021 MLB season, which happened to be the 350th homer of Cabrera's career.

It was Cabrera's only hit of the game as he finished 1-for-4 as the Tigers beat the Indians 3-2.

Jeff McNeil gets HBP three times vs. Cardinals

New York Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil encountered some bad luck as he was hit by a pitch three times during Friday's spring training game against St. Louis.

It started in the bottom of the first when McNeil was hit on the wrist on a 3-2 pitch from Cardinals pitcher Evan Kruczynski. Then in the fifth, McNeil was grazed in the thigh by an 0-1 pitch from Andrew Miller

As if that wasn't enough, Miller came up again in the sixth and was hit on the instep of his left foot by a 1-1 pitch from Giovanny Gallegos.

Some players have a knack for getting hit by pitches more frequently than others, but this was just ridiculous.  What are the odds of getting HBP by three different pitchers?  The sad thing is that will never show up in any kind of record books since this is just an exhibition game, so McNeil has nothing to show for the pain he suffered.  Just one of those days.

Brent Suter accidentally does reverse somersault on mound vs Cubs

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brent Suter pulled off an impressive reverse somersault on the mound by accident during Saturday night's game against Chicago.

It happened in the third inning of a scoreless game with two outs and no men on base.  Suter was in the middle of his windup on the 1-0 pitch when he seemed to catch his plant foot in the dirt, throwing him off balance.  As he fell backward, Suter was able to position himself to roll backwards and pop right back up on his feet, as if he meant to do it.
Suter's teammates got a good laugh out of it, and the Brewers in the dugout gave him a hand.

Suter shook it off well as he struck out Cubs batter Ian Happ to end the inning. It would be his last batter of the game as Suter finished with 3 scoreless innings, striking out six and giving up only one hit.

Ben Heller struggles to open bullpen gate

New York Yankees relief pitcher Ben Heller had some trouble opening the bullpen gate during Friday's opening game of a doubleheader in Baltimore, resulting in an awkwardly funny moment.

Ben Heller tried to push the door open from behind the outfield wall as he entered the game in the middle of the fifth inning. Unfortunately, the door was designed to be pulled open from the bullpen. It took Heller a few seconds to figure it out.

We've all been there at some point or another, so it's OK to laugh.

Heller gave up a solo home run and a walk as he only pitched one inning, but the Yankees beat the Orioles 6-5.

Richard Rodriguez throws WILD pitch so far outside it's hilarious

Richard Rodriguez throws pitch WAY outside, Pirates vs Tigers, 8/9/2020

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Richard Rodriguez threw a pitch so far outside of the strike zone during Sunday's game against Detroit that "wild" doesn't begin to describe it.

It happened in the top of the eighth inning with two outs and a runner on first base as the game was tied at 1-1. The first pitch to Tigers DH Miguel Cabrera was WAY off, as in very high and several feet behind Cabrera. The pitch went into the backstop, allowing the Tigers runner to move ahead to second base.

It looked like Rodriguez's front cleat clipped the mound during his motion towards the plate, throwing off his release point, which resulted in the wild, wild pitch. It left television announcers baffled: "What was that?"

Rodriguez ended up giving up a single to Cabrera, which allowed the winning run to score. Although Rodriguez was able to recover and finish the game without giving up another run, he took the loss as the Pirates lost to the Tigers 2-1.

Hunter Pence loses fly ball, blows Johnny Cueto's no-hit bid

Hunter Pence loses fly ball in the lights Giants vs Dodgers 8/8/2020

San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence lost a fly ball in the lights during Saturday night's game in Los Angeles against the division rival Dodgers.

It happened in the bottom of the sixth with no outs and the Giants holding a 5-0 lead. Giants starter Johnny Cueto had given up no hits (with only one base runner) to that point. Dodgers batter Enrique Hernandez hit the 2-1 pitch into left field in what appeared to be an easy out. Unfortunately, Pence lost the ball in the lights almost immediately, and the ball landed nearly 30 feet behind him.

Mike Yastrzemski chased down the ball from center field. Hernandez took advantage of the misplay, ending up on third base as he was credited with a triple. The play led to a four-run rally for the Dodgers which knocked Cueto out of the game.

Naturally, Pence felt awful not only for losing the fly ball, but blowing Cueto's chance at a no-hitter. Fortunately, the Giants were able to hold on to the 5-4 victory.

Phillie Phanatic delivers cheesesteaks to Phillies broadcast booth

Phillie Phanatic hands cheesesteak to John Kruk 8/8/2020

The Philly Phanatic delivered cheesesteaks to the Philadelphia Phillies television broadcast team during Saturday's game against Atlanta.

The Phanatic stopped by the NBC Sports Philadelphia broadcast booth during the top of the fifth inning bringing cheesesteaks from Tony Luke's to Tom McCarthy and John Kruk.

The Phillies are looking for ways to keep the Phanatic busy this year since there are no fans to interact with due to the MLB's coronavirus restrictions.  The Phanatic was doing his part to prevent the spread of the virus by wearing a mask.

Phillie Phanatic roams stands wearing Santa suit

The Phillie Phanatic was roaming the empty stands at Citizens Bank Park dressed as Santa Claus during Saturday's Philadelphia Phillies game against the visiting Miami Marlins.

Despite having no fans to entertain, the Phanatic was very into the game. It's not clear why the Phanatic was wearing the Santa suit.

The Phanatic is sporting a new look this year, including bushy blue eyebrows and a longer blue feather tail, due to a legal dispute between the Phillies and the designer of the mascot.

The Phanatic must have brought the Phillies some luck, as they beat the Marlins 7-1.

Adam Duvall HR ball hits dog cardboard cutout

Atlanta Braves outfielder Adam Duvall hit a cardboard cutout with the image of a dog with a home run during Saturday's game in New York.

Duvall broke open a scoreless game with his 350-foot homer to right field. There happened to be three cardboard cutouts of dogs in the section where Duvall's homer landed, and the baseball hit the cutout of Mets left fielder Jeff McNeil's dog Willow.

Now that is something that has probably never happened before in MLB history. Duvall couldn't do that again in a million more tries.

Duvall went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts, but had the honor of scoring the winning run in the game. With Duvall striking out to end the 9th for the Braves, he became the lead runner at second base to start the 10th inning and came around to score on a single. The Braves ended up beating the Mets 5-3.

Nathan Eovaldi accidentally switches uniform numbers during Red Sox Opening Day

Boston Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi suffered a uniform mishap during Friday's Opening Day game against Baltimore when he put on the wrong uniform for the third inning.

Eovaldi normally wears number 17, but when he came out to the mound for the third inning, he was wearing number 7.

According to the AP, Eovaldi swapped out his number 17 jersey that he wore for the first two innings for a new one because it was too sweaty. However, he didn't realize that he had mistakenly grabbed a number 7 jersey. Number 7 belongs to catcher Christian Vazquez, who also wore number 7 during the third inning, giving the Red Sox two number 7s on the field for the third inning.

After Eovaldi finished up the third without giving up a run, he clued into the fact that something was up when everyone was calling him "Vazque". After realizing that the uniform did feel a little tight around the arms, Eovaldi took off the number 7 and put on his own number 17, which he wore for the rest of his outing. Hopefully the equipment managers can come up with a system to make sure that this doesn't happen again.

Regardless of the number he was wearing, Eovaldi had a solid outing, pitching six innings and only giving up a run, which was more than enough to earn the victory as the Red Sox crushed the Orioles 13-2.
