Matthew Tkachuk penalized for batting puck out of midair from bench

Matthew Tkachuk bats puck out of midair, Ducks vs Flames, 10/18/2021
Calgary Flames right winger Matthew Tkachuk was penalized for a bizarre play he made from the bench during Monday night's game against Anaheim.

It happened with just under six minutes remaining in the first period as the Flames held a 1-0 lead. Flames center Mikael Backlund hit the puck high across the ice and it appeared that it was going over the glass and out of play above the Flames bench. However, for some reason, Tkachuk stood up and used his stick to knock the puck back onto the ice.

It was a strange play to watch, and it was unclear to everyone why Tkachuk did that. Given that the puck was going out of play, the referees blew the whistle to stop play anyway, so it was a wasted effort by Tkachuk. Making matters worse, the referees sent Tkachuk to the penalty box for two minutes for interference.

Fan takes mayo bath on ESPN College GameDay

Fan takes mayo bath on ESPN College GameDay 9/4/2021
ESPN College GameDay featured a shirtless fan giving himself a mayo bath during Saturday's live broadcast from Charlotte. The ESPN crew was in town for Saturday night's Top-5 matchup between Georgia and Clemson, scheduled for 7:30PM at Bank of America Stadium. The broadcast took place in Romare Bearden Park near the stadium and was filled with fans who were pumped up for the game. One particular fan was so pumped up that he poured a whole bottle of Duke's mayonnaise all over himself. Now that is absolutely nasty, but huge publicity for Duke's. Will this become a weekly trend? We shall see.

SNL Flashback: The "All-Drug Olympics" Weightlifting Finals

Dennis Miller introduces the All-Drug Olympics SNL 10/8/1988

With the Tokyo Summer Olympics in full swing, this is the perfect time to look back on one of the funniest Olympic-themed Saturday Night Live sketches: Weekend Update coverage of the weightlifting finals at the "All-Drug Olympics".

The All-Drug Olympics was part of SNL's Weekend Update segment during SNL's 14th season opener in October 1988. It is less than two minutes long, but is still funnier than any SNL sketch from recent years. Dennis Miller introduced the hilarious premise as "an idea whose time has come. The first All-Drug Olympics opened today in Bogota, Columbia. Athletes are allowed to take any substance whatsoever before, after, and even during the competition. So far, 115 world records have been shattered."

Kevin Nealon served as the live correspondent covering the weightlifting finals. He introduced Soviet weightlifter Sergei Akmudov (played by the late Phil Hartman) as he prepared for a clean and jerk of over 1500 pounds. According to Nealon, Akmudov had taken "anabolic steroids, novocaine, Nyquil, Darvon and some sort of fish paralyzer", along with several cocktails within the hour.

Nealon then stepped away to allow viewers to watch Akmudov attempt a world record clean and jerk of over 1500 pounds. Viewers got more than they bargained for, however, as Akmudov not only failed to lift the weight off the floor, but also tore his arms clean off, leaving blood squirting from his shoulders.

NOTE: This video shows a lot of blood at the 58-second mark, and although it is not real, it is not for the squeamish. And it is definitely not for the kids.

The funniest part of the sketch is Nealon's deadpan reaction to the gory scene: "You know, you hate to see something like this happen, Dennis. He probably doesn’t have that much pain right now, but I think tomorrow he’s really gonna feel that, Dennis. Back to you."

Fernando Tatis Jr. loses track of count, thinks he walked on 2-2 pitch

Fernando Tatis Jr. loses track of count, D-backs vs Padres, 6/25/2021
San Diego Padres superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was caught losing track of the count during Friday's game against Arizona.

It happened during his at-bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. As the 2-2 pitch from D-backs reliever Matt Peacock came in a bit inside, Tatis was ready to toss his bat aside as he began to walk towards first base.

Fortunately, he quickly realized that the pitch was not ball four, so he smoothly walked backwards to home plate as if he knew all along that the count was 3-2.

Tatis ended up grounding out to shortstop in the at-bat. However, Padres fans were more than willing to forgive Tatis Jr. for his counting mishap, considering that he had already hit 3 home runs (and a single) in the game with 4 RBIs. Tatis finished the game 4-for-5 as the Padres beat the Diamondbacks 11-5

Nathan Eovaldi switches jerseys midgame vs. Yankees

Nathan Eovaldi changes jerseys Red Sox vs Yankees 6/4/2021

Boston Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi switched jerseys in the middle of Friday night's game in the Bronx against the New York Yankees.

It happened in the bottom of the fifth inning as Eovaldi came out to the mound wearing the special Red Sox Memorial Day jersey featuring a patch of a flower with the phrase "Lest We Forget". He started the game with the standard Red Sox jersey. It did not go unnoticed by television commentators.

What makes this even more curious is that it is not the first time that Eovaldi has changed jerseys midgame. The last time it happened (last July), it was a wardrobe accident that was even more noticeable since he pitched wearing a teammate's jersey.  This time around, it seemed to be an intentional uniform top change, and fortunately it had the right name on the back.

The jersey switch didn't seem to have a negative effect on Eovaldi, as he only gave up one earned run in six innings while striking out seven as he earned the 5-2 victory.

David Bertans fails to draw foul with embarrassing flop

David Bertans flop Game 3 Wizards vs Sixers 5/29/2021
Washington Wizards forward David Bertans failed to draw a foul with an embarrassing flop during Saturday's Game 3 of their NBA first round playoff matchup against Philadelphia.

It happened on a Wizards offensive possession as Bertrans got bumped by Sixers point guard Ben Simmons. Bertrans put his acting skills to the test as he threw himself backwards and slid about 5 feet on the court as he fell to the ground, but the officials did not call Simmons for a foul.
The Wizards lost the game 132-103 and are now down 3-0 in the series. Bertans finished the game with 8 points and one steal in 31 minutes. Bertans needs to be better than that, as it will take more than a few foul calls for the Wizards to avoid being swept, let alone come back to win the series.

Henrik Stenson calmly breaks club during PGA Tournament final round

Swedish pro golfer Henrik Stenson calmly destroyed one of his clubs during Sunday's final round of the PGA Tournament at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina.

It happened on the 15th hole as Stenson's second shot on the par-4 went past the green and into a sand trap. Stenson did not make a scene, but rather channeled his frustration by subtly pushing his club into the ground with enough force to break it in half.
Everyone has those days, but at least Stenson found a way to release his anger without completely losing his cool, as we have seen with some golfers in the past.

Stenson ended up with a bogey on the 15th. He managed to finish 1-under for the final round, but ended his run at the tournament at 8-over par, well out of contention.

Luis Robert misplays pop fly, ball bounces off his head

Luis Robert misplays pop fly, ball bounces off his head, White Sox vs Angels 4/3/2021

Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert suffered an embarrassing (and probably painful) mishap during Saturday night's game against the L.A. Angels when he misplayed a pop fly that bounced off his head.

It happened in the bottom of the third inning with two outs and an Angels runner on first as the White Sox held a 1-0 lead. Angels batter Anthony Rendon hit a pop fly to short center field which looked like it would end the inning. White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson was called off by Robert as he came in from center field to grab it. However, things came off the rails for the White Sox as Rendon adjusted his path to the ball at the last second and somehow missed it. The ball bounced off Robert's head and towards right field.

As right fielder Adam Eaton picked up the ball, Angels runner David Fletcher rounded third and headed home. Eaton's throw to the plate hit the pitcher's mound and bounced over catcher Zack Collins' head and towards the backstop, allowing Rendon to reach second easily.

Robert and Eaton were both charged with errors on the play. Rendon came around to score as the next Angels batter hit a single to knock him home, giving the Angels a 2-1 lead.

Robert was not seriously hurt and stayed in the game, batting 2-for-4 with an RBI. However, his misplay was costly as the Angels beat the White Sox 5-3.  Just goes to show that major leaguers have tough days in the field, too.

Cat sneaks onto Coors Field, interrupts Rockies-Dodgers game

Friday night's Colorado Rockies game against the visiting L.A. Dodgers was interrupted briefly as a cat ran across Coors Field.

It happened in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out as the Dodgers led the Rockies 11-6. Rockies batter Ryan McMahon was at the plate waiting for the 1-2 pitch when the cat snuck onto the field somewhere near the Dodgers dugout and ran all the way into the outfield, when it finally stopped to catch its breath.

The cat began running again but changed direction when it saw security coming for it.  The cat tried to outrun security along the warning track, but was unable to do so.

Unfortunately, the cat did not bring good luck to the Rockies, as they were unable to score any more runs, allowing the Dodgers to earn the 11-6 victory.

Gerrit Cole loses track of outs on Opening Day vs. Blue Jays

New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole had an embarrassing moment early in Thursday's Opening Day game against Toronto when he lost track of the outs while on the mound.

It happened in the top of the second inning as Cole had runners on first and second with one out after giving up three singles and a run in the inning. On a 3-2 pitch, Cole got Blue Jays batter Randal Grichuk to swing and miss on a slider low and outside for strike three. Cole began to walk towards the Yankees dugout, but quickly realized that the strikeout was only the second out of the inning.

Cole made his way back to the mound and struck out the next batter for the third out to end the inning.  He gave up two runs on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, but left the game with the score tied at 2-2 so did not get a decision.  The Yankees lost to the Blue Jays 3-2 in 10 innings.

Miguel Cabrera hits HR, slides into second base vs. Indians

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was involved in a funny moment during Thursday's Opening Day game against Cleveland when he slid into second base after hitting a home run.

It happened in the bottom of the first with two outs and a runner on first in a scoreless game. With the count at 1-1, Cabrera hit a 92 mph fastball off Indians pitcher Shane Bieber into the right field seats. However, given that the game was being played in the middle of a snowstorm and the ball bounced off the railing above the fence and back onto the field, Cabrera slid into second base thinking he only had a double.

It was pretty funny to see, but understandable given the circumstances. The second base umpire notified Cabrera that he had in fact hit a homer, and Cabrera continued jogging the bases until he reached home plate to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Cabrera gets credit for the first home run of the 2021 MLB season, which happened to be the 350th homer of Cabrera's career.

It was Cabrera's only hit of the game as he finished 1-for-4 as the Tigers beat the Indians 3-2.

Ben Vander Plas blows out shoe vs. Creighton

Ohio Bobcats junior forward Ben Vander Plas found himself in rare company during Monday night's second round game of the NCAA tournament against Creighton when his shoe blew out on the court.

It happened in the second half with Creighton holding a comfortable 52-33 lead. Vander Plas was sliding his feet to position himself on defense when his right foot blew through the sole of the shoe, forcing him to pause in the middle of the play as he recovered his balance and looked around to figure out what just happened.

Vander Plas came out of the game briefly as the equipment manager found a spare right shoe for him to play with. The spare shoe was grey, which did not match the team's black shoes, but in an emergency, you go with whatever is available.

Vander Plas was very fortunate that he was not injured on the play, as Zion Williamson was when his shoe blew out during a Duke game two years ago.

Vander Plas did not miss much game action due to the shoe incident, as he finished with 9 points and 10 rebounds in 38 minutes of playing time. However, Ohio's NCAA tournament run came to an end as Creighton won the game 72-58 to advance to the Sweet 16.

Dog runs on pitch, interrupts Swiss Super League soccer match

Sunday's Swiss Super League soccer match between FC Zurich and Zion was briefly interrupted when a dog ran onto the pitch.

It happened during the 40th minute of the match with the score tied at 1-1. With the game action taking place towards the middle of the field, a white dog ran in from the sideline and towards the corner of the field, where it found a spot to stop and look around for a while. A man ran down from the stands and was able to get the dog's attention to lure it off the field.

We have seen our share of animals interrupting sporting events, consisting of different animals and covering several sports. There isn't much that can be done about wild animals, but why are people bringing their cats and dogs to the games? Our advice: leave the pets at home.

Overall, the delay lasted for less than a minute, but it provided the players and officials with a comedy break. Neither team scored another goal in the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Tyler Herro attempts to slip in practice free throw vs Clippers

Miami Heat point guard Tyler Herro tried to pull a fast one during Monday's game against the L.A. Clippers, but the alert officials didn't let him get away with it.

It happened in the final minute of the second quarter with the Clippers holding a 64-62 lead and Herro at the free throw line ready to shoot two foul shots. As the official bounced the ball to Herro at the foul line, he casually threw up a shot that bounced off the front rim. Herro was under the impression that the Clippers were substituting Andre Iguodala into the game, so he figured his shot didn't count. However, the Clippers never made the substitution, and Herro was caught off-guard when the official told him he only had one shot left.

It would be surprising if Herro genuinely believed he could get away with taking a practice free throw. Not sure how Herro got the idea in his head, as this is not allowed in basketball at any level. Herro ended up missing the second free throw as well, so his attempt to skirt the rules backfired. We would guess that it is unlikely that he will try this again.

Herro finished with 27 points and 5 rebounds in 41 minutes, but it wasn't enough as the Clippers beat the Heat 125-118. The Clippers raised their record to 21-8, good for third place in the NBA Western Conference standings. The Heat now stand at a disappointing 11-16, tied for 10th in the NBA Eastern Confererence.

Bradley Beal crawls under bleachers to fetch ball vs. Rockets

Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal went above and beyond with his efforts during Sunday's game against Houston as he fetched a ball that rolled under the bleachers.

It happened in the third quarter with the Wizards holding a 73-69 lead.  Needless to say, it was an unusual sight to see the NBA's leading scorer squeeze his body into a small space underneath the stands so he could direct the ball back towards the court.

Now that's not something you expect to see every day, especially from the player who leads the NBA in scoring.  Not surprisingly, after he got himself out, the Wizards inbounded the ball and Beal scored the basket.

It was that kind of game for Beal, who scored 37 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 36 minutes as the Wizards beat the Rockets 131-119.  The win raised the Wizards record to 8-19 and pulled them out of the bottom slot of the NBA Eastern Conference standings.  Beal raised his scoring average to over 33 points per game.

Kyle Kuzma dunks all over Michael Porter Jr.

Los Angeles Lakers small forward Kyle Kuzma threw down a monster dunk on top of Denver Nuggets small forward Michael Porter Jr. during Sunday night's NBA Western Conference game at the Pepsi Center.

It happened in the third quarter with the Nuggets holding an 80-67 lead.  Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope took a 3-point shot that bounced off the rim.  While Porter was in position for the defensive rebound underneath the basket, Kuzma started moving in towards the basket behind Porter from the opposite end of the 3-point line.  As the ball bounced off the rim, Kuzma was leaping for the rebound before Porter had even left the ground.  The end result was Kuzma grabbing the rebound and throwing it down for the slam in one motion, knocking Porter to the ground on the follow-through.

Now that is a bit embarrassing for Porter, but hopefully a lesson learned.  He has to be more ready for that defensive rebound next time.

Kuzma finished the night with 19 points and 8 rebounds in 26 minutes.  Porter finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds in 30 minutes.

The Nuggets won the game 122-115 to raise their record to 15-11, 7th in the Western Conference.  The Lakers record is now 21-7, good for 2nd in the Western Conference.

Francesco Molinari hits grounder with first tee shot at Pebble Beach

Italian pro golfer Francesco Molinari did not have a good start to Saturday's third round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am as he hit a ground ball off the first tee.

Molinari started the round at 5-under, 7 shots off the lead. It's safe to say his opening tee shot did not go as planned as it traveled only 70 yards. Molinari managed to pull out a bogey on the hole, but unfortunately, any hopes of pulling back into contention are likely off the table. After 10 holes, Molinari stands at 4-under and 9 shots off the lead.

Tide Super Bowl LV commercial features 'Jason Alexander Hoodie'

Jason Alexander plays a supporting role in a commercial for Tide that will air during Super Bowl LV next week, while the real star of the ad is the hoodie with his face on it.

The commercial starts with a mom walking into her teenage son's bedroom and asking her to wash the Jason Alexander hoodie. The boy has a typical reaction, as he looks over at the hoodie laying on top of a chair in his room and says "It looks clean to me."

The mother expresses some doubt: "Is it though?"

As the theme from the classic 80s television show "The Greatest American Hero" begins to play, the boy begins to remember some situations where the hoodie may have gotten a bit messy, dirty or infected with germs, and the viewer is treated to a montage of these scenes. We watch the boy used the hoodie as a napkin for his phone, a cushion for a park bench that he could sit on, and as home plate during a softball game. The hoodie also suffered some other wear and tear from playing basketball, washing the car and breakdancing, not to mention tug-of-war with the dog.

The hilarious part of the commercial, however, comes from watching Jason Alexander's facial expressions change on the hoodie to fit the situations. Alexander's face appears shocked as the dog drools on him and scared as the boy tosses his sweaty sock into his gym bag on top of him. Alexander's face winces in pain after taking a direct hit from a basketball.

Jason Alexander appears as himself at the end of the ad, reacting to the boy crossing the street in front of his car while wearing the hoodie with his face on it.
"Hey, that's my face! You can't just wear my face! Give me back my face!"
Super Bowl LV commercials cost $5.5 million for 30 seconds.  This is a 60-second ad, so it would seem that Procter & Gamble (the company that manufactures Tide) spent $11 million just to have this aired during the big game.  That would not include a paycheck to Alexander himself - no word on how much he made on this.

Dolphins accidentally run over official celebrating INT vs. Broncos

The Miami Dolphins accidentally knocked a referee to the ground while celebrating an interception during Sunday's game in Denver.

It happened during Denver's first offensive drive less than two minutes into the game. Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard intercepted a pass from quarterback Drew Lock, giving the Dolphins the ball on the Broncos 22-yard line. The defense ran towards the end zone to celebrate the play, but didn't notice one of the officials in the way and ran him over. The official appeared to be covering his face after the collision and was taken to the locker room. We hope he is OK.

Myles Garrett takes down Dwayne Haskins by his undershirt

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett took down Washington Football Team QB Dwayne Haskins by his undershirt during Sunday's game at FirstEnergy Stadium. It happened during a Washington offensive drive in the first half. As Haskins dropped back to pass, Garrett was able to beat lineman Geron Christian Sr. Haskins nearly escaped as Garrett lost his footing, but Garrett managed to grab a hold of Haskins' undershirt as he went down. The undershirt was so long that Garrett was able to grab it with both hands as he lay on the ground, and Haskins was unable to break free as the resistance was just too much for him. Television announcers attributed the play to Myles Garrett's athletic ability, which was definitely a factor here, but we have a different take on this: How huge is Dwayne Haskins' undershirt? Look how long that shirt stretched out. Is it size 3XL? Garrett doesn't need the help. We recommend that Haskins wear smaller undershirts for the rest of the season. [LBS]
