A Tampa Bay Rays fan made an impressive barehanded snag of a foul ball during Sunday's spring training game against the New York Yankees.
It happened in the bottom of the eighth with one out as the Yankees held a 7-6 lead. Rays batter Lucius Fox hit a 3-1 pitch out of play near the right field stands. The Rays fan lunged backwards and grabbed it with his left hand as he fell onto the grass.
The fan took a bow and received a round of applause. Someone needs to give that fan a contract.
Fox lined out to second base, but hit a single which knocked in two runs earlier in the game as the Rays beat the Yankees 9-7.

The Phillie Phanatic has a new look for the 2020 season, and he made his season debut at Sunday's Philadelphia Phillies home opener against Pittsburgh.
The Phanatic now has blue eyebrows, stars around his eyes, feathers on his arms and a blue tail. However, he still has that same prankster personality that he always had.
The story behind the new look comes down to a legal dispute between the Phillies and the original designers of the Phanatic mascot. The 35-year-old copyright agreement between the Phillies and the designers, Bonnie Erickson and Wayde Harrison, expires on June 15th of this year. The designers are hoping to renegotiate the rights to the Phanatic character, which is within their rights according to federal law. However, the Phillies believe they hold the Phanatic rights "forever". The Phillies seem to be hoping that the tweaks to the Phanatic's look will be enough to claim the character as their own design. We shall see.

Rapper Snoop Dogg joined the Los Angeles Kings television broadcast booth to bring his unique perspective to Saturday night's game against Colorado.
In January 2019, Snoop joined the Kings broadcast team of Alex Faust and Jim Fox for a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and received rave reviews. It was only a matter of time before he received an invite back, and with the Kings holding "90s Night", it was the perfect opportunity. Snoop was decked out in full Kings gear, with a black Kings cap and white Kings jacket.
Snoop was hyping a new clothing store called "Snoopy's" which he's opening in Inglewood across from the new stadium where the Rams and Chargers will be playing. He also has an electronic gaming cafe that he is opening up for a younger generation of gamers.
Snoop also revealed that he will be in the new EA Sports NHL hockey game. Players will have the choice of having Snoop announcing the game for them. That would be fun. It's amazing how his appearance at one hockey game has opened so many new doors for him.
To top off a fun night for Snoop, Kings coach Todd McClellan invited him into the locker room prior to the game to reveal the team's starting lineup. Naturally, Snoop brought some of his trademark style for the announcements:
"Drew Doughty - no doubt."
"Up front, we gonna have Anze Kopitar - cuz you got the coke, you understand me?"
"19 - Alex I-follow (Iafollo) - do your job."
"Dustin Get-Down Brown - you know what time it is."
"In the back, we got Jonathan Quick, like quick to gettin' yo' ass."
The Kings loved it, and Faust and Fox had a blast as they did last year. Unfortunately, Snoop's presence didn't bring luck to the Kings, as they lost to the Avs 2-1 in a shootout.

Miami Marlins shortstop Jazz Chisholm stole third base and tried to take it with him during Saturday's spring training game against the New York Mets.
It happened in the top of the eighth inning with two outs and runners at first and second with the game tied at 3-3. Chisholm was the runner at second and he took off on the 1-0 pitch, making it to third base easily. However, in the process of sliding into third, he pulled the bag right out of the dirt.
Time was called and the bag was easily placed back into place, but it made for a few laughs.
Chisholm scored the game-winning run for the Marlins as they beat the Mets 5-3.

"Thanks again for coming out, Vipers fans. We need y'all to be loud today. We need you to bring that energy, and most importantly...we need you to SMELL what the Vipers are cooking!"
Honestly, it was pretty weak imitation, but you can't fault Horn for trying. The Vipers are winless heading into Week 3 and need whatever motivation they can find to come out with a win against an undefeated roughnecks team.

Edmonton Oilers center Leon Draisaitl scored a goal with the help of the strangest bounce you will ever see during Friday night's game against Minnesota.
It happened in the second period with the score tied at 2. The Oilers won the faceoff in the Wild zone, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins taking the puck and passing it back to Matthew Benning at the point. Benning shot the puck wide and it bounced along the boards and around the back of the net to Draisaitl. Draisaitl tried to center it and the puck hit the heel of the skate of Wild left winger Jordan Greenway, who was skating back up the ice the other way. The puck deflected backwards and into the air, fooling everyone, especially goaltender Alex Stalock, as the puck found its way into the back of the net.
You don't see that every day.
Unfortunately, Draisaitl's goal would be the last for the Oilers in the game, as the Wild followed up with three goals (all scored by Jared Spurgeon) to give Minnesota the 5-3 road victory.

Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn was ejected for his dangerous hit on Arizona Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson during Wednesday night's game at the American Airlines Center.
It happened in the second period with the Stars holding a 1-0 lead. With the puck in the Stars zone, Ekman-Larsson chased a puck towards the boards when Benn came in from behind and shoved him into the glass head-first.
Ekman-Larsson went down hard and was taken off the ice, but did return to the game later on. Benn was given a game misconduct penalty for the dangerous hit, which was confirmed with a review.

St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas accidentally pulled the helmet off the head of New Jersey Devils right winger Nick Merkley during Tuesday night's game at the Enterprise Center.
It happened in the third period with the Blues holding a 2-0 lead. Thomas was in control of the puck behind his old blue line with Merkley coming across the ice for the check. Thomas sent the puck up the boards and braced for the collision, but in the process, his stick came up and got caught in the earhole of Merkley's helmet. The stick went through the earhole and yanked the hemlet off Merkley's head.
Merkley appeared to be cut and came off the ice. Play was stopped, and Thomas received a four-minute penalty for high sticking. Merkley did not return to the game.

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin checked Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt right into his own bench during Monday night's game at the T-Mobile Arena.
It happened with a little over six minutes remaining in the first period. Schmidt skated over to the boards in front of his bench to keep the puck away from Ovechkin as he chased after it. Schmidt knocked the puck away, but Ovechkin drilled him and flipped him over the boards in the process.
Ovechkin had to shield his face from Schmidt's skate blade as he fell into the bench. That was a bit too close.
Schmidt got a good laugh about it once he made it back on the ice. He is a former teammate of Ovechkin, having been a member of the Capitals for four seasons, so no hard feelings there. The television commentators got a good laugh as well, calling it an "involuntary line change" for Schmidt.
In the end, Schmidt had the last laugh as the Golden Knights beat the Capitals 3-2

On Sunday, Shaquille O'Neal revealed the top "highlights" (sarcasm intended) from the first half of the 2019-20 NBA season:
Russell Westbrook: "Dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble..."
Tristan Thompson: "Tragic Thompson alert". While in the backcourt, given the option of passing to one of his two guards, he takes it up himself and heaves it from near half-court. (In fairness, there was only 3 seconds left on the shot clock. Still...really?)
LeBron James: "You can't spell walking without K-I-N-G." Hey, it wasn't called, so...
Eric Bledsoe: Dribbling the ball inbounds? That's a new one.

Some of the Seattle Dragons players celebrated the team's first XFL victory by chugging Bud Light Seltzers.
Defensive end Anthony Johnson grabbed two cans of lime seltzer, while defensive tackle Will Sutton had a can of what appeared to be the black cherry flavor. Johnson smashed his cans together and sprayed them a lot before chugging his, while Sutton chugged his full can and smashed it on the ground.
Now these guys know how to celebrate. And this is just a regular season game. Just imagine what a championship celebration will be like.

XFL analyst Greg McElroy tried to steal Cris Collinsworth's signature Sunday Night Football "slide" move to open the broadcast of Saturday's XFL Week 2 matchup between the New York Guardians and the D.C. Defenders.
Play-by-play man Steve Levy opened up the broadcast with a Collinsworth tweet with a positive review of XFL's Week 1 action.
I LIKE THE XFL. Coaches I respect, big plays, fresh rules, and a professional broadcast. Congrats guys.
That provided the perfect setup for McElroy to slide in from the right side of the screen next to Levy to mark his first appearance of the game, prompting Levy's deadpan reaction: "Really?"
McElroy's slide was not executed as smoothly as Collinsworth's trademark move used with Al Michaels during SNF broadcasts. As it happens, Collinsworth was watching and made sure to point that out with his review: "C’mon Greg it’s not a shoulder bump."
For those of us watching at home, it was hilarious. It's moments like this that give us hope that the XFL can succeed.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Chris Paul gets reduced to a supporting role in the latest round of State Farm commercials that began airing during NBA All-Star Weekend.
The series of ads features actor Alfonso Ribiero as "The New Chris Paul" where he tries to play himself off as the real CP3. With the exception of a small resemblance, his impersonation doesn't work - not even a little.
In this ad, Ribiero tries to film "The New Chris Paul Workout Show" but shatters a window while demonstrating a crossover with a barbell. Hilarity ensues as the real CP3 shows up and he jumps through a pane glass door.
Ribiero steals the show in this ad as he tries to steal CP3's parking space.
The tagline: "There's no replacing the real Chris Paul, just like there's no replacing State Farm."

The 2020 NBA Rising Stars Challenge was held in Chicago on Friday night as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend, and it did not disappoint.
On the scoreboard, the USA team dominated the World team 151-131, but both sides put on a show for the fans. Thanks to Bleacher Report, we have a video compilation of every slam dunk from the game.
The standout highlights feature this year's Rookie of the Year candidates (and former AAU teammates) as Ja Morant set up Zion Williamson with the alley oop slam.
With the USA team holding a commanding lead as the game wound down, the final minute of the game turned into a dunk contest...literally. Unfortunately, Williamson couldn't take advantage of his opportunities as his attempts to bring the fans to their feet fell short.
Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges was named MVP with 20 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Michigan Wolverines freshman designated hitter Jimmy Obertop was ejected in an egregious case of an overreaction by an umpire during Friday night's MLB4 Collegiate Baseball Tournament game against Vanderbilt.
It happened in the top of the ninth inning with one out and Michigan holding a 4-3 lead. After taking a called strike two, Obertop put the tip of his bat down on the ground and swiped it back before stepping away from home plate to get ready for the next pitch. Apparently the home plate umpire misinterpreted the dirt swipe and felt Obertop was showing him up, and the umpire immediately ejected him.
this kid really got tossed in the 9th inning for ...uh, swiping the dirt with his bat after a called strike? pic.twitter.com/n1wRlPp2zt
Naturally, Obertop was stunned. Michigan manager Erik Bakich rightfully argued in defense of his player, but to no avail.
That's absolutely ridiculous for the home plate umpire to have such a quick trigger, especially given the game situation. Hopefully the NCAA reviews this and suspends the umpire accordingly. No excuse for this garbage.

Tuesday night's game between the Anaheim Ducks and visiting St. Louis Blues was halted after Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester had a "cardiac episode" and collapsed on the bench during the first period.
It happened during a timeout with 7:50 remaining in the first. Bouwmeester slumped forward and fell to his knees, and his Blues teammates immediately called for the medics.
Medical staffers were on scene within seconds, and a stretcher was brought out for Bouwmeester, who was brought to a hospital. Players on both teams huddled around the Blues bench and were clearly concerned for his well-being.
According to Fox News, a defibrillator was used on Bouwmeester, but he was conscious and alert.
The game did not resume and was postponed at a later date.

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse was penalized for tossing his stick to his own goaltender during Thursday night's game against San Jose.
Nurse had the best intentions in mind, as he was trying to help out Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen, who had lost his stick. Nurse was at the blue line waiting for the opportunity to end his shift when there was a turnover in the neutral zone. Rather than leave Koskinen fending for himself without a stick, Nurse slid his stick to Koskinen. Unfortunately, NHL rules do not allow for any throwing of sticks, so Nurse was sent to the penalty box for two minutes.
If Nurse had skated over to Koskinen and handed him the stick, that would have been allowed.

Stephen Colbert referenced the story during his "Meanwhile..." segment on Wednesday night. The punchline: "This is truly historic. It is the first Philadelphia sports fan to be acquitted of assault."
Conan O'Brien dedicated a whole segment to the story on Tuesday night's episode of Conan. In the segment, a fake "Gritty" was relieved to be cleared of the charges, but then proceeded to beat up a stage manager and a teenage boy, raising the question of whether he had truly learned his lesson.
The SEC Network goofed up a graphic on South Carolina men's basketball coach Frank Martin during the opening minutes of Wednesday night's game against Ole Miss.
A graphic was displayed with Martin's Division I coaching resume, with highlights including his .555 winning percentage as South Carolina's head coach (in his 8th season) and a 2017 Final Four appearance. However, the graphic was displayed with the face of Auburn coach Bruce Pearl.
Fortunately, Martin was being shown live on camera next to the graphic, so a fair amount of people may not have noticed it at all. Still, you would think people would double check these things before they get aired. It makes for awkward television.

Houston Rockets point guard Austin Rivers found himself apologizing to superstar teammate James Harden for preventing him from earning a triple-double in Tuesday night's 125-110 win over Charlotte.
With under 30 seconds left in the game, Harden had 40 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds. With only one more rebound needed to complete the triple-double, he seemed to have the perfect opportunity as Hornets forward Miles Bridges shot a 3-pointer that bounced off the rim. However, Rivers didn't get the memo, as he instinctively grabbed the rebound before Harden could get to the ball.
Rivers realized his mistake a few seconds later and apologized to Harden from across the court. Unfortunately, with the final seconds winding down, there was going to be no way for Rivers to make it up to him.
Harden played it off like it was no big deal, but he didn't look happy.

Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George showed his toughness by returning to Monday night's game against San Antonio after taking an elbow to the face which left him with a bloody nose.
It happened midway through the third quarter with the Clippers holding a 68-67 lead. Spurs forward DeMar DeRozan drove down the lane and George stepped in to force him to take a shot. As DeRozan took the shot with his right hand, he elbowed George out of the way with his left arm, hitting George right in the nose.
The game was stopped while trainers came out to tend to George's bloody nose. DeRozan not only was called for an offensive foul, but was assessed a flagrant 1 after the referees reviewed the replay.
George returned to the game in the fourth quarter and played extremely well, scoring 8 of his 19 points, including this clutch shot:

Detroit Red Wings left winger Tyler Bertuzzi and center Andreas Athanasiou entertained themselves (and their fans) by juggling the puck in the air with their sticks during pregame warmups prior to Monday night's game against Philadelphia.
Athanasiou got things going by flipping it to Bertuzzi, and they took turns bouncing it on their sticks and flipping it back and forth to each other.
Bertuzzi even used his foot to keep the puck in the air for a few extra seconds before they dropped it. Overall, Bertuzzi and Athanasiou managed to keep the puck in the air for nearly 25 seconds. That's impressive.

NFL tight end Vernon Davis announced his retirement from professional football on Sunday.
The news was a bit of a surprise, but the way Davis decided to make his announcement was even more surprising. He revealed the news in a title sequence to a "Golden Girls"-type sketch with Rob Gronkowski and James Harrison during the FOX Super Bowl pregame festivities.
At the beginning of the sketch, which only lasts for about a minute, Gronkowski introduces Harrison and Davis as part of his "retirement crew". When Davis is introduced, he says "That's right. I'm retiring."
The rest of the skit is pretty silly, with the highlight being Harrison pushing Gronkowski into a pool.
Davis was a member of the Washington Redskins for the last four seasons, but missed most of last season with a concussion. He is best known for his time with the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent nine-and-a-half seasons. He also played for the Denver Broncos for nine games during the 2015 season.
We wish Davis well in his retirement.

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt hosted this week's episode of Saturday Night Live where he put his comedy skills to the test.
The most hilarious sketch of the night had to be Watt playing it straight as he recorded some out-of-character dialogue for the EA Sports Madden 21 video game.
Watt is known for his All-Pro football skills and serves as a role model off the field, so it was surprising to hear him record lines such as:
"Dangit! He outsmarted me!"
"Oops!"
"Whoopsies!"
"Captain Clumsy strikes again!"
"God, I SUCK today!"
"Y'all see that sack? I hope our quarterback's OK. This other team is good!"
And don't get us started about Watt taunting a boy in a wheelchair.
The sketch also features a hysterical avatar of Watt that has a pierced belly button and a face that looks like it took a beating from Mike Tyson. Of course, they had to make Watt's touchdown celebration the "floss".

Friday night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live featured the latest NFL edition of Mean Tweets. Players featured this time around include Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Corey Clement, Joey Bosa, Devin Funchess, Sony Michel, Todd Gurley, Jay Ajayi, Clay Matthews, Jared Goff, Michael Irvin & Terry Bradshaw.
WARNING: There is inappropriate language in this video. Although it is censored, this is not for the kids.
We can only imagine what mean tweets Patriots fans will send Tom Brady if he ends up leaving New England. We're not convinced that it will happen, but we shall see.

Jimmy Fallon joked about the Kansas City Chiefs mascot and their quarterback Patrick Mahomes during the "Thank You Notes" segment of Friday's episode of The Tonight Show.
"Thank you, Kansas City Chiefs mascot K.C. Wolf, for looking less like a wolf and more like a New York City subway rat on bath salts."
Must be the googly eyes.
"Thank you, Patrick Mahomes, for having the last name that sounds like a lame dad trying to relate to his son's friends. What's up, m'homes? You all tickin' the tock?"

A group of cute puppies picked the winner of Super Bowl LIV on Friday's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
12 puppies had to choose between two bowls of kibble, one representing the San Francisco 49ers and the other representing the Kansas City Chiefs. The winner of Super Bowl LIV would be the bowl that gets the most puppies.
It was a very close contest, but by a very slight margin, the San Francisco 49ers were picked the winners.
