Balloon crashes Dodgers-Giants opener with no fans in attendance

A balloon landed on the infield at Dodger Stadium during Thursday night's Opening Day game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and visiting San Francisco Giants. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but given that there were no fans in the stands, it was extremely bizarre.

It happened in the bottom of the eighth inning with no outs and Cody Bellinger at the plate. The balloon floated down from the air and landed on the dirt of the infield. A Dodgers ball boy named Branden came out to take away the balloon.

It looks like the source of the balloon was tracked down, as celebrity stylist Chaz Dean was celebrating his birthday when one of the balloons floated away. Based on his picture of the floating balloon, it matches the one that crashed the Dodgers game.

Dodgers use cardboard cutout fans, including Tommy Lasorda, for Opening Day

The Los Angeles Dodgers held their Opening Day game against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Thursday night in front of 4500 cardboard cutout fans.

Many of the images were Dodgers fans who submitted images of themselves, but a few familiar faces were in the "crowd", including former manager (and Hall of Famer) Tommy Lasorda.

The Houston Astros and New York Knicks were the targets of jokes during the Weekend Update segment of this week's episode of Saturday Night Live.

The new look for the Phillie Phanatic inspired SNL writers with an idea of a new mascot for the Houston Astros.

"20,000 high school students in New York City got to see the cast of the Broadway hit 'To Kill a Mockingbird' performed at Madison Square Garden. And no surprise, the cast beat the Knicks by 25 points."

Knicks fans hold out hope that one day James Dolan will sell the team, but that's not happening anytime soon.

Rays fan makes lunging grab of Lucius Fox foul ball

A Tampa Bay Rays fan made an impressive barehanded snag of a foul ball during Sunday's spring training game against the New York Yankees.

It happened in the bottom of the eighth with one out as the Yankees held a 7-6 lead. Rays batter Lucius Fox hit a 3-1 pitch out of play near the right field stands. The Rays fan lunged backwards and grabbed it with his left hand as he fell onto the grass. 

The fan took a bow and received a round of applause. Someone needs to give that fan a contract.

Fox lined out to second base, but hit a single which knocked in two runs earlier in the game as the Rays beat the Yankees 9-7.

The story behind the new look comes down to a legal dispute between the Phillies and the original designers of the Phanatic mascot. The 35-year-old copyright agreement between the Phillies and the designers, Bonnie Erickson and Wayde Harrison, expires on June 15th of this year. The designers are hoping to renegotiate the rights to the Phanatic character, which is within their rights according to federal law. However, the Phillies believe they hold the Phanatic rights "forever". The Phillies seem to be hoping that the tweaks to the Phanatic's look will be enough to claim the character as their own design. Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Derek Jeter and Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty were the subjects of jokes during the Weekend Update of this week's episode of Saturday Night Live.
