New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes suffered an embarrassing mishap at the worst possible moment during Tuesday night's game in Philadelphia.
It happened in the second period with the Devils holding a 3-1 lead. Hughes found himself behind the Flyers defense as the Devils stopped the Flyers on the defensive end and passed the puck right to him. Hughes had nobody between himself and goaltender Carter Hart, but inexplicably lost his footing and fell down, wasting the breakaway opportunity.
Hughes probably wishes he could have a do-over on that one. Fortunately, his teammates had his back as the Devils held on for a 4-3 win.

Ohio Bobcats junior forward Ben Vander Plas found himself in rare company during Monday night's second round game of the NCAA tournament against Creighton when his shoe blew out on the court.
It happened in the second half with Creighton holding a comfortable 52-33 lead. Vander Plas was sliding his feet to position himself on defense when his right foot blew through the sole of the shoe, forcing him to pause in the middle of the play as he recovered his balance and looked around to figure out what just happened.
Vander Plas came out of the game briefly as the equipment manager found a spare right shoe for him to play with. The spare shoe was grey, which did not match the team's black shoes, but in an emergency, you go with whatever is available.
Vander Plas did not miss much game action due to the shoe incident, as he finished with 9 points and 10 rebounds in 38 minutes of playing time. However, Ohio's NCAA tournament run came to an end as Creighton won the game 72-58 to advance to the Sweet 16.

San Jose Sharks left winger Marcus Sorensen missed a golden opportunity during Saturday night's game against St. Louis by whiffing on a shot in front of an open net.
It happened about two minutes into the third period with the game tied at 2-2. As the puck was dumped into the Blues end of the ice, goaltender Ville Husso came out of the net to play the puck off the boards. Husso misplayed the puck, which drifted in front of the empty net as Sorensen was skating towards the open goal. However, instead of shooting it in, Sorensen tried to poke-check the puck into the net and ended up missing the puck entirely.
As it turned out, this play would foreshadow how the rest of the game would go for the Sharks. The Blues scored three goals in the third period, while the Sharks were kept off the board for the rest of the game, giving the Blues a 5-2 victory.

New York Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil encountered some bad luck as he was hit by a pitch three times during Friday's spring training game against St. Louis.
It started in the bottom of the first when McNeil was hit on the wrist on a 3-2 pitch from Cardinals pitcher Evan Kruczynski. Then in the fifth, McNeil was grazed in the thigh by an 0-1 pitch from Andrew Miller.
As if that wasn't enough, Miller came up again in the sixth and was hit on the instep of his left foot by a 1-1 pitch from Giovanny Gallegos.
Some players have a knack for getting hit by pitches more frequently than others, but this was just ridiculous. What are the odds of getting HBP by three different pitchers? The sad thing is that will never show up in any kind of record books since this is just an exhibition game, so McNeil has nothing to show for the pain he suffered. Just one of those days.
