St. Etienne fans throw flares onto pitch before Ligue 1 match vs. Angers

St. Etienne fans throw flares onto pitch 10/22/2021
Friday night's Ligue 1 soccer match between St. Etienne and visiting Angers was delayed as fans threw flares onto the pitch.

It happened prior to the start of the match as the players were warming up.  The home fans were calling for manager Claude Puel to resign as St. Etienne started the season winless after 10 matches, putting them at the bottom of Ligue 1.  The delay lasted nearly an hour.

As for the match, St. Etienne was able to rally from a two goal deficit and pull out a 2-2 draw on a header from defender Mickael Nade in the fourth minute of stoppage time.  However, they remain winless and will likely need some drastic changes to salvage their season.

Joe Thornton spears Boris Katchouk in groin

Joe Thornton spears Boris Katchouk in groin, Panthers vs. Lightning, 10/19/2021

Florida Panthers center Joe Thornton speared Tampa Bay Lightning left winger Boris Katchouk in the groin during Tuesday night's NHL game at the Amalie Arena.

It happened with just under five minutes remaining in the first period with no score. As Thornton and several other players on both teams battled for the puck along the boards in front of the Panthers bench, Katchouk came along and checked Thornton in the back. Thornton responded by spearing Katchouk in the crotch.

Play was stopped as Katchouk went down in pain and stayed down for several seconds before slowly getting up and skating off the ice. Thornton received a two minute slashing penalty. He may have felt justified in retaliating, but as they say, it's always the second guy that gets caught.

The Panthers beat the Lightning 4-1 and remain undefeated after three games.  The back-to-back Stanley Cup champions fell to 2-2 on the season.

Matthew Tkachuk penalized for batting puck out of midair from bench

Matthew Tkachuk bats puck out of midair, Ducks vs Flames, 10/18/2021
Calgary Flames right winger Matthew Tkachuk was penalized for a bizarre play he made from the bench during Monday night's game against Anaheim.

It happened with just under six minutes remaining in the first period as the Flames held a 1-0 lead. Flames center Mikael Backlund hit the puck high across the ice and it appeared that it was going over the glass and out of play above the Flames bench. However, for some reason, Tkachuk stood up and used his stick to knock the puck back onto the ice.

It was a strange play to watch, and it was unclear to everyone why Tkachuk did that. Given that the puck was going out of play, the referees blew the whistle to stop play anyway, so it was a wasted effort by Tkachuk. Making matters worse, the referees sent Tkachuk to the penalty box for two minutes for interference.

Worst Injuries in the History of the Baltimore Ravens

The NFL is one of the most followed physical sports worldwide. Due to the nature of the game, injuries are common. However, some injuries not only derail NFL teams for years but also cost players their careers. If you look at the list of some of the worst gruesome injuries in the history of the NFL, you will find a long list of names, including Napoleon McCallum, Johnny Knox, and Rashad Johnson.

The focus will be on the Baltimore Ravens, one of the most competitive NFL teams with fans across the globe. Over the years, the Ravens have had their fair share of bad luck with their players suffering horrible injuries.

J.K. Dobbins

J.K. Dobbins’ accident is one of the few recent injuries in sports that had sports betting fans shaking. The former running back from Ohio State suffered one of the worst season-ending knee injuries which, according to the MRI, entailed a torn ACL. The injury occurred on a Saturday night in the preseason when the Baltimore Ravens were playing against the Washington Football Team. Even though Baltimore ended up winning the game 37-3, it was evident that they were not going to have one of the youngest running backs in the NFL available for the entire 2021 regular season.

Despite being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens as a second round draft pick, Dobbins had proven to be among the most promising players on the NFL. In 2020, J.K. Dobbins made nine touchdowns and ran 805 yards, making him one of the best players on the team. Dobbins was the second ex-Buckeye to experience a season-ending ACL injury prior to the 2021 season after linebacker Raekwon McMillan suffered a torn ACL in a preseason practice for the New England Patriots.

Gus Edwards

Gus Edwards, born in Liberia, suffered a season-ending knee injury in preseason practice. The practice was ended given that Edwards was the second Ravens player to suffer a serious knee injury during the practice session. After the practice, it was confirmed that Edwards had a torn ACL. Edwards was poised to lead the Ravens backfield as they headed into the 2021 regular season after Dobbins went down with his season-ending knee injury. Edwards is considered one of the most prolific players despite being signed as an undrafted free agent. The injury crippled the Ravens, with Edwards being added to a long list of players on injured reserve.

Jamal Lewis

In 2001, Jamal Lewis tore his ACL during a preseason practice. What made Lewis’ torn ACL one of the most horrific injuries for the team is that it robbed the Ravens the chance to win another Super Bowl. At first, the medical team available during training diagnosed the injury as a bruise, and Lewis walked off the field holding his kneecap. However, after an MRI, it was discovered that Jamal Lewis tore his anterior cruciate ligament, making it impossible for him to lead the Ravens through the remainder of the season.

According to then Ravens coach Brian Billick, Jamal had worked so hard for the season. Furthermore, he was their most important player, which is why his ACL injury was a hard hit for both the Ravens' players and fans. Even though he missed the entire season, his recovery was incredible, as he came back to lead the NFL in rushing with over 2,000 yards in 2003, falling just short of the NFL single-season record for rushing yards.

L.J. Fort

The Baltimore Ravens seem to suffer more torn ACL injuries than most teams in the NFL. During the 2021 preseason, the veteran defender L.J. Fort tore his ACL while playing against the Carolina Panthers. The season-ending injury saw the linebacker pave the way for Kristian Welch, who is entering his second year in the NFL. According to the latest player contract details, L.J. Fort had just signed a 1-year contract with a substantial veteran salary. The injury also meant that linebackers Chris Board, Patrick Queen, and Malik Harrison would be considered to help the Ravens battle through the coming games.

Fort is a former Northern Iowa player who in 2012 was signed as a linebacker by the Cleveland Browns. After playing for several teams, Fort signed a contract with the Ravens in September 2019, later extended in November 2019.

Rashod Bateman

Rashod Bateman is a former University of Minnesota football player drafted by the Ravens in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. He is also among the players who suffered one of the worst injuries in the history of the Ravens. Though not career-ending as Alex Smith's gruesome leg injury, Bateman’s torn groin is one of the injuries that handicapped the Ravens. Bateman was placed on the injured reserve after he suffered the groin injury during preseason practice. The injury required surgery, which despite going perfectly, required the wide receiver to take some time off the field. Fortunately, Rashod Bateman received the injury shortly after the roster cutdown deadline, or else it would have led to the end of his season. Bateman’s injury posed a challenge to the Baltimore Ravens passing attack.

Ronnie Stanley

Ronnie Stanley was done for the season in 2020 after he fractured and dislocated his ankle. The offensive tackle suffered the injury while playing the Steelers. The injury of the ankle was termed serious but not career-ending, as he was placed on injured reserve.

Ironically, Stanley suffered the injury just a few days after he had signed a $98.75 million five-year contract extension with the Ravens. According to coach John Harbaugh, Stanley is one of the best offensive tackle players in the NFL with stunning statistics, leading to the massive contract compared to some of his fellow teammates. Stanley began his football career at Notre Dame. He was selected by the Ravens as the 6th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. In 2019, Stanley earned first-team All-Pro honors.

Nick Boyle

Nick Boyle is one of the top players for the Ravens, known for his fantastic tight end play. However, on November 15, 2020, Nick Boyle was carted off to the locker room after being tackled at the knees while catching a short pass while the Ravens were losing to the Patriots. Before exiting, Nick Boyle had made only a single catch for four yards. After diagnosis, it was ascertained that the helmet to Boyle's ankle damaged his hamstring, MCL, and PCL, ending his season. He was placed on the injured reserve for the remainder of the 2020 regular season and remained on IR to start the 2021 season. Even though there were no damages to his ACL, the rest of Nick Boyle's knee was seriously damaged.

These are some of the worst injuries in the history of the Baltimore Ravens. In addition to being traumatizing, it required some of the best players to be placed on injured reserve, putting the team at a disadvantage. For instance, the injuries for players such as Stanley, Dobbins, and Lewis saw the team lose key players at critical positions, thus weakening the team’s lineups. While most of the injuries occurred on the field due to collisions between players, others happened during training camp. Regardless of where and when the injuries occurred, they had a significant impact on the team and the players as well.

Rasmus Andersson elbows, headbutts Kailer Yamamoto during Flames-Oilers scrum

Rasmus Andersson roughs up Kailer Yamamoto, Flames vs Oilers, 10/16/2021
Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson delivered a headbutt and an elbow to the face of Edmonton Oilers right winger Kailer Yamamoto during Saturday night's NHL game at Rogers Place.

It happened in the first period with the Oilers holding a 1-0 lead. Yamamoto charged the Flames net and took a shot from close range, then followed through with contact on goaltender Jacob Markstrom in an attempt to knock the puck into the net as the whistle blew to stop play. The extra contact set off Andersson, who elbowed Yamamoto in the face and threw him against the boards before delivering the headbutt.

Andersson managed to throw a few punches to Yamamoto's face as a linesman got in between them to stop the scrum and separate the players. He definitely got the better end of this one. Andersson was sent to the penalty box and received a double minor penalty on the play for roughing and elbowing.

Yamamoto and the Oilers got the last laugh, however, as the Oilers beat the Flames 5-2

A Quick Guide to American Football Positions

Everyone loves watching a game of American football.  Seeing your favorite teams score a touchdown and rooting for the best players to bet on are all part of the fun of football season.

Yet, there are so many players on the field, and for newbies to American football, understanding who is who and what position does what is no easy feat. However, it need not be so tricky.

One of the simplest things to understand about American football is that there are two primary components to each team: offense and defense. The offense tries to work their way down the field with the ball to the other team's end zone to score a touchdown. The defense attempts to stop their opposition from scoring.

It is really simple when you become familiar with it, and we will make it easier for you by explaining the offensive and defensive positions on every American football team.

Offensive positions

The offense controls possession of the football and moves the ball down the field towards the opposition's end zone in order to score, either via a touchdown or by kicking a field goal.

Quarterback

The quarterback is the leader of the offense and is considered the focal point of the team. You could say they call the shots as they call the plays in the huddle. They will call signals at the line of scrimmage and then receive the ball from the center.  Once he has the has the ball, the QB will hand off the ball to a running back, throw it to a receiver, or run with it themselves.

Center

The center is the player who snaps the ball to the quarterback at the line of scrimmage. They handle the ball on every single play and block for the quarterback and running backs.

Running back

The running back is a player who will run with the football. They are also sometimes referred to as tailbacks, halfbacks and rushers.

Fullback

A fullback is a player who is responsible for blocking for the running back. They are also responsible for pass-blocking in order to protect the quarterback too. They are generally bigger than running backs.  They may also carry the ball on short yardage plays.

Wide receiver

A wide receiver is a player who uses their speed and agility to elude the opposition's defenders and catch the football. Teams will often use as many as two, three or four wide receivers on every play. They are usually tall and fast, and their main job is to run pass routes and find an open spot on the field to catch passes, although they may occasionally be called on to block. They are generally lined up split wide near the sidelines at the start of a play.

Tight end

The tight end is a player who will serve as a receiver and as a blocker. This player will line up beside the offensive tackle on either side of the quarterback. Tight ends are often considered to be hybrid players, as they are a cross between a wide receiver and an offensive lineman. They help with blocking on running plays and serve as an extra receiver on passing plays.

Left guard and right guard

The left and right guards are two inner members of the offensive line. It is their job to protect the quarterback and the ball carriers.  They not only protect the quarterback from incoming defensive linemen during pass plays, but also create openings for the running backs to head through.

Left tackle and right tackle

The left and right tackles are the two outer members of the offensive line. Their job is basically to protect and to block, keeping defenders away from the offensive player who has possession of the ball, thus enabling him to advance the football down the field in order to score.

Defensive positions

The defense in American football attempts to prevent the opposing offense from scoring points by intercepting the ball, tackling runners and generally stopping them from moving the ball closer to the end zone and creating a scoring opportunity.

Defensive tackle

The defensive tackles are the inner members of the defensive line. It is their job to hold their ground in order to stop a running play, or to run through a gap in the offensive line and pressure the quarterback, or disrupt the backfield.

Defensive end

The defensive ends are the outer members of the defensive line. Their job is to power through the blocking of the offensive linemen to tackle either the ball carrier or the quarterback.  On running plays to the outside, they are responsible for forcing the running back out of bounds or back inside towards their defensive teammates.

Linebacker

Linebackers are the players who line up behind the defensive linemen.  They are typically considered the team's best tacklers and one of them usually calls the defensive formations before each play. Depending on the defensive line formation, most teams will employ around three or four linebackers on each play. They will divide their responsibilities in defending the run and the pass.

Safety

Safeties are players who will line up the deepest in the secondary and serve as the last line of defense. There are free safeties and strong safeties.  Their primary role is to defend the deep pass, with the strong safeties helping out on run plays.

Cornerback

The cornerbacks are players who line up on the wider parts of the field, typically opposite the offensive receivers. They cover the receivers, defend against the pass and make tackles. They may also blitz the quarterback and defend against offensive running plays such as sweeps and reverses. They can create turnovers through hard tackles, interceptions, and deflecting quarterback passes.
