Signs Point to Rising Recession Risk

Signs Point to Rising Recession Risk, Recession fear has risen swiftly this year. Inflation is rising at its fastest pace in decades, the Federal Reserve has begun what is expected to be an aggressive rate-hike cycle, global supply-chain problems persist, and the Russia-Ukraine war has upended commodity markets. All this has driven a rise in market volatility and fear of a coming economic downturn. We think the risk of a recession—sooner rather than later—has picked up. Intense market volatility, sour consumer confidence, and downward pressure on income growth all point to an economy that is slowing down. U.S. gross domestic product growth (GDP) contracted at a 1.5% annualized rate in the first quarter of 2022 (note that early GDP data is always subject to revision in later quarters). That was the first decline since the second quarter of 2020. While the trade and inventory components were largely responsible for the negative figure, the trend in consumer spending (which makes up about 70% of the U.S. economy) slowed throughout the quarter.

What a recession is (and isn't)

This is a good time to remind investors that a U.S. recession is not—and has never been—defined as two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. In fact, the 2001 recession only saw one quarterly GDP contraction; also, despite GDP contracting for two consecutive quarters in the mid-to-late-1940s, there was no recession. So the contraction in first-quarter 2022 GDP doesn't necessarily mean a recession is beginning. The official arbiter of U.S. recessions is the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), which defines recession as "a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and that lasts more than a few months." The four primary components that the NBER looks at to determine whether the United States is in a recession are—not coincidentally—the four indicators that make up The Conference Board’s Coincident Economic Index (CEI):

◉ real personal income less transfer payments;
◉ nonfarm payroll employment;
◉ wholesale and retail sales;
◉ and industrial production.

As you can see in the chart below, the CEI tends to track the business cycle in real time, peaking at the start of recessions and finding a trough at the end of them.

Coincident Economic Index

Recessions are not a matter of "if" but simply a matter of "when." News media often portray them as a catastrophe, but the reality is every economic cycle ends in a recession, allowing any excesses to be wrung out and thus making way for the start of a new cycle. To be sure, investors' muscle memory of the past couple recessions paints them in a rather unpleasant light: Both the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the global financial crisis in 2007-2008 sent shockwaves throughout world asset markets and spawned multiple, lasting crises (different in nature, of course).

Barring some exogenous, unexpected event that sends yet another shock through the global system, we think the next recession will be a bit more (for lack of a better term) natural: The Fed hikes rates—sometimes aggressively—to combat inflation and/or growth that’s overheating, unemployment increases, the labor market weakens, incomes fall, and overall growth slows.

Look to the leaders

At any point in the cycle—and especially when a recession is on the horizon—it is useful to analyze leading economic indicators for clues as to where the economy is headed. The Leading Economic Index (LEI) from The Conference Board is an amalgamation of key indicators that move in advance of the business cycle. Covering the labor market, stock prices, and consumer/business confidence, among others, the LEI’s level and trend are perhaps the best indications of both the strength and durability of the phases of the cycle. Whenever discussing the LEI, we always like to remind investors that the indicators' trends are just as important—if not more important—than their levels. Individual components shouldn't be looked at in isolation, and their strength in level terms often isn't enough for a comprehensive analysis of inflection points, even in the run-up to recessions. As an example, below are snapshots of the LEI's level and trend in the months prior to the start of the 2020, 2007, and 2001 recessions.

Starting with the pandemic-driven recession in 2020, you can see in the first table below that most indicators were at either strong or fair levels. Given the rapidity with which the virus drove the world into a recession, trends within the LEI's components were not particularly weak—but to be sure, there was more red and yellow in the trend column vs. the level column.

2020 recession

Moving to the recession that started in 2007—famously sparked by the bursting of the subprime mortgage bubble—you can see below that trends were in worse shape—and unsurprisingly, housing activity (as reflected in building permits) had already started to weaken considerably. It was the labor and business spending areas that took a bit longer to catch up.

2007 recession

Meanwhile, prior to the 2001 recession, the LEI's trend column was almost a complete sea of red, as you can see in the table below. Not only that, but even the levels were in rough shape, with only building permits showing any degree of strength. Arguably, the chief reason for the souring economic data in advance of the start of the recession was the collapse in the stock market, courtesy of the bursting of the tech and telecom bubble that started in March 2000. From the peak in March 2000 through February 2001, the S&P 500 was down 17% and the Nasdaq was down 57% (of course, suffering even greater drawdowns until late 2002). Given households' historic exposure to stocks at the time, hits to confidence through the asset market channel were large enough to help accelerate the economy’s downturn.

2001 recession

nseparable A market-driven downturn has the potential to take shape, mostly due to the near-historic interconnectedness between the economy and the stock market. As you can see in the chart below, the value of corporate equities relative to U.S. GDP (known as the "Buffett Indicator" given its historical status as one of investor Warren Buffett's favorite valuation metrics) is well over 200%, slightly off its all-time high but incredibly stretched relative to history.

Stocks tied to the economy

The Buffett indicator—along with other valuation metrics—is often used to argue that stocks are egregiously overvalued and due for an imminent downturn, particularly by market watchers who are bearish to begin with. While the drop in valuations and weak performance this year have confirmed both assertions, we'd emphasize that there is more to glean from looking at households' exposure to the overall stock market. Put simply, given the Buffett Indicator's 200%-plus reading and households' outsized exposure to equities, there is a heightened degree of risk that if the bear market is deep and long-lasting, it may deal a greater hit to the economy by discouraging consumer confidence and spending.

It also doesn't bode well for stock market performance. As you can see in the chart below, high allocations to stocks (at extremes) historically have tended to lead to weak returns in the subsequent 10 years (shown by the yellow line).

Households favor stocks

Indexes are unmanaged, do not incur management fees, costs and expenses, and cannot be invested in directly. Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Of course, one indicator isn't the sole determinant or predictor of the path stocks end up taking, but investors should note that both the market and economy face an increasingly steep uphill climb in the near term. Fiscal and monetary policy are no longer stimulative, the world continues to struggle from rising interest rates and supply shocks, and pervasive inflation is actively denting income growth and spending power.

Perpetual motion

Along with the strength in the aforementioned leading indicators, investors should continue to take note of the energy sphere, as the spike in commodity prices this year has been consistent with prior recessions. As you can see in the chart below, inflation-adjusted crude oil prices have climbed well beyond their 24-month moving average; going back to the early-1970s, it's been quite common for a recession to follow such a price rise. Only once (in August 2005) did the change move above 50% without a recession on its way (or already underway).

Recession-like oil spike

Y-axis is truncated for visual purposes; the actual peak was 242%.

Energy spending as a share of overall U.S. consumption has waned over time, but the unfortunate reality is that higher oil and gasoline prices act as a regressive tax—especially for those on the lower end of the wealth and income spectrum. At a time when inflation is running hot and asset markets are under pressure, a jump in commodity prices can depress consumer confidence and lead to lowe

In sum

Despite the drop in consumer confidence and bearishness across survey data, consumer spending has held up so far this year, and the broader economy remains on solid footing in level terms. However, trends among leading economic indicators are crucial to watch, especially when approaching inflection points in the cycle. Put another way, we'll emphasize our oft-used phrase: When it comes to the relationship between the stock market and economic data, "better" or "worse" tend to matter more than "good" or "bad."

See Love Is Blind Co-Stars Kyle Abrams and Shake Chatterjee Get Heated on Instagram

Days after Netflix aired the season two finale of Love Is Blind—and revealed who left who at the altar—fans noticed that two of the guys exchanged some heated words on Instagram that certainly raised eyebrows.

It all went down after Love Is Blind's verified page teased the upcoming reunion, available to stream on March 4. In the comments, Kyle Abrams (who proposed to Shaina Hurley before they went their separate ways over religious differences) shared his take on all the onscreen antics over the weekend by saying, "Just me enjoying the train wreck."

Abhishek "Shake" Chatterjee responded directly to his co-star, writing, "translation: you're a little bihh." The veterinarian, who was dumped by Deepti Vempati at the altar, went on to tease the feuds fans can expect from the upcoming episode. "Imma warn you," he wrote, "I KEEPS IT REAL AT THIS REUNION."

Kyle also responded to a fan who noted that he seemed to be merely watching and sipping the tea. He wrote, "well put."

While Kyle is vowing to stay out of the drama, things have been brewing between Shake and his almost brother-in-law.

Deepti's brother Sunny and his partner Hina Merchant Vempati penned a joint Instagram post over the weekend in which they slammed Shake for disrespecting their sister on the show.

"‘Shake', bruh, you're a loser," they said in the post. "You minimized my sister's life by making some awful and cringeworthy comments about her."

Throughout the season, viewers watched Shake admit to friends and family that he wasn't sexually attracted to his fiancée Deepti, despite feeling they were otherwise well-matched.

"You made these statements knowing your own mom would one day watch it; my parents and my entire family had to sit through you talking behind my sister's back about insecurities she fought her entire life," the couple added. "We welcomed you into our home, and you saw it as an opportunity for clout; so forgive me if I'm not sympathetic towards you and the hate you're receiving."

The pair called out Shake for his alleged "BS" and asked him to "stay the f--k away" from their sister.

Shake, for his part, shared a message on Instagram this week that read, "I'm not perfect but I'm real."

Meanwhile, Deepti celebrated the Love Is Blind finale with a girls' trip to Las Vegas, hitting the town with co-stars Iyanna McNeely and Danielle Ruhl and also sharing a new photo with Sal Perez. See photos of the outing below.

Sam Elliott Says Power of the Dog Is a "Piece of S--t" in Scathing Review of Oscar-Nominated Film

Sam Elliott didn't hold back in his recent interview with Marc Maron, calling Jane Campion's Netflix movie Power of the Dog a "piece of s--t."

It's safe to say that Sam Elliott isn't Jane Campion's No. 1 fan.

The 1883 actor made that abundantly clear when discussing the director's Netflix movie Power of the Dog on the Monday, Feb. 28 episode of WTF With Marc Maron podcast. In the last 10 minutes of the show, he called the film a "piece of s--t," decrying its portrayal of cowboys in the early 1920s.

He seemed to specifically take issue with Benedict Cumberbatch's character, Phil Burbank, being a closeted homosexual, which inspires his animosity towards his sister-in-law Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and nephew Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Elliott said that Campion could not possibly understand the motivations of a cowboy when she was born and raised in New Zealand.

"What the f--k does this woman from down there know about the American West?" he exclaimed, before discussing the film location, "And why in the f--k did she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana? And say this is the way it was? That f--king rubbed me the wrong way, pal."

He was also disgusted by the costumes the characters wore, saying that the stars looked more like Chippendales dancers than cowboys. "That's what all these f--king cowboys in that movie looked like," Elliott said. "They're running around in chaps and no shirts. There's all these allusions of homosexuality throughout the f--king movie."

Host Marc Maron replied, "I think that's what the movie is about."

Though Elliott himself has only played a cowboy, he explained that he's familiar with the ranching lifestyle after working on the Paramount+ series in Texas. "I was hanging out with families—not men—but families," the Sacramento-native said. "Big, long, extended, multiple-generation families that made their living and their lives were all about being cowboys. And boy, when I f--king saw that I thought, ‘What the f--k? Where are we in this world today?'"

Maron acknowledged Elliott's disappointment, but added, "I don't know that that's the biggest issue at hand."

"It's not the biggest issue, but for me, it was the only issue," Elliott insisted. "I mean, Cumberbatch never got out of his f--king chaps. He had two pairs of chaps, a woolly pair and a leather pair. And every f--king time he would walk in from somewhere—he never was on a horse, maybe once—he'd walk into the f--king house, storm up the f--king stairs, go lay in his bed in his chaps and play his banjo. It's like, what the f--k?"

E! News reached out to Elliott's reps for comment and didn't hear back.

To be fair to Campion, it seems like Elliott isn't a big fan of many Oscar nominees. When Maron asked if he liked House of Gucci, starring Elliott's A Star Is Born co-star Lady Gaga, he grumbled, "I don't know. But I love her."

Jesse Williams Settles Child Custody Dispute With Ex-Wife Aryn Drake-Lee

Almost five years after Jesse Williams filed for divorce from Aryn Drake-Lee, the former couple reached a new custody agreement concerning their two kids: son Maceo and daughter Sadie.

Jesse Williams has reached a new child custody agreement with his ex-wife, Aryn Drake-Lee.

According to court documents obtained by E! News, the Grey's Anatomy star and the real estate broker will continue to share legal custody of their daughter Sadie, 8, and son Maceo, 6, though Williams will have "tie-breaking authority over COVID-19 protocols" for the year if they cannot agree on things like vaccinations for their children.

A judge with the Los Angeles County Superior Court also granted Williams' request to modify his custodial schedule so it aligns with his work in the Broadway production of Take Me Out this spring. Per the judge's ruling, the 40-year-old actor will now have four consecutive days per month with his children in New York, with two of those days being weekends.

Though Drake-Lee's initial ask to reduce Williams' custodial time was denied, the judge did approve her request that when her ex "cancels some parenting time, he cannot later 'uncancel'" unless there is a mutual agreement in writing, according to the documents. As a result, the two parents must "meet and confer" about extracurricular activities for their children, per the docs.

"Mother should appreciate that father cannot share with her certain schedules as far in advance as she would like, and that he may not always want his time with the children to be filled up with extracurriculars," the judge's ruling read, "and father should appreciate that mother is adapting her own schedule to meet his needs, and the children deserve to have extracurricular activities that they engage in on a regular basis, not just when mom is in charge."

If the parents cannot agree, Drake-Lee holds "tie-breaking authority for one extracurricular activity at a time for each of the children" this year and can use it provided that it doesn't impede on Williams' holidays or time with the kids in New York, per the ruling.

"The parties both seek a great deal of fine-tuning in their custody and visitation orders, much of which a court is not as well equipped to handle as the parents themselves through a third party coordinator or counselor," the judge noted in court documents. "Of course, if the parties cannot agree they can come back to court."

Williams filed for divorce from Drake-Lee in April 2017 after more than four years of marriage. Later that year, a judge ruled that the pair would share joint legal custody of their children and ordered Williams to pay his ex $160,000—$100,000 of which served as an advance towards spousal and child support and $60,000 served as an advance toward her attorney fees.

In January 2018, Williams was ordered to pay Drake-Lee over $50,000 per month in spousal support, as well as split the residuals he had earned in the span of their marriage. In addition, he was also held responsible for her attorney and accounting fees. Though Williams was awarded joint physical custody of their children in March 2018, he hit back at Drake-Lee's request for more money that summer and claimed that he was already paying her too much.

Since then, the two have continued to contend over finances in court. Per People, they finalized their divorce in October 2020, agreeing to joint and legal custody of their children and that they must consult with each other before posting photos of the kids on social media.

Queen Elizabeth II Tests Positive for COVID-19

Queen Elizabeth II, 95, has contracted the coronavirus, Buckingham Palace announced Feb. 20. Earlier this month, the monarch had met with her son, Prince Charles, and other guests at her home.

Queen Elizabeth II has tested positive for the coronavirus, Buckingham Palace says.

Queen Elizabeth II Tests Positive for COVID-19

The news about the 95-year-old U.K. monarch was announced Sunday, Feb. 20. "Her Majesty is experiencing mild cold like symptoms but expects to continue light duties at Windsor over the coming week," the statement said. "She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines."

News of her ailment comes two weeks after the Queen, the world's longest-reigning monarch, marked the 70th anniversary of her accession to the British throne, and months after she was briefly hospitalized for an undisclosed ailment. BBC News reported that it is understood that a number of people have tested positive at Windsor Castle, where the Queen, who is fully vaccinated, has lived and worked since the start of the pandemic, and where she met her son and heir Prince Charles and other guests this month.

The Prince of Wales had visited his mother Feb. 8, a royal source told BBC News. On Feb. 10, Clarence House announced that Charles tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time, and on Feb. 14, it was revealed his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, had also contracted the virus.

Despite her health setback, the Royal Family still put out a statement on the Queen's behalf on social media to congratulate Great Britain's curling teams on their recent successes at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

"I send my warming congratulations to the Team GB Women's Curling team on your outstanding performance in winning the Gold Medal at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, following the Silver Medal achieved by the Men's Curling team yesterday," the message read. "I know that your local communities and people throughout the United Kingdom will join me in sending our good wishes to you, your coaches and the friends and family who have supported you in your great success."

The message was signed "Elizabeth R." The R stands for "regina," which means "queen" in Latin.

While the Queen has largely kept up her royal engagements, both in-person and virtual in recent months, concerns about her health have grown, given her age and especially after her hospitalization last year, which was followed in November by an announcement from Buckingham Palace that the Queen had sprained her back, forcing her to miss the annual Remembrance Sunday ceremony. On Feb 16, during her last in-person audience session at Windsor, while standing and chatting with two defense staff members, the monarch lightly said she "Well, as you can see, I can't move."

In addition to keeping up with her royal engagements, the Queen has also been taking care of family business to secure their legacy. Earlier this month, she released a statement that read, "When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service."

Khloe Kardashian Takes True Thompson and Chicago West Out for a "Girls Day"

Moving past the drama with ex Tristian Thompson, Khloe Kardashian spent time hanging with daughter True Thompson and niece Chicago West.

Girls just want to have fun.

Khloe Kardashian took to her Instagram Stories, Saturday, Feb. 19, to share a series of selfies from an afternoon outing with her 3-year-old daughter True Thompson and 4-year-old niece Chicago West.

In one sweet snap, the 37-year-old reality star puckers up with a kiss face as True, whom she shares with ex Tristan Thompson, smiles alongside her while buckled up in a car seat.

In another pic, Khloe makes a similar face while appearing with Chicago, the youngest daughter of Kim Kardashian and e Kanye "Ye" West's four children. Khloe captioned the photo, "Girls day."

In each adorable snap, Khloe rocks a black sleeveless top, oversized dark shades and large hoop earrings.

The girls' outing comes just one day after Tristan shared photos of himself and True enjoying a daddy-daughter date. Tristian posted a sweet video to Instagram that showed him planting a sweet kiss on his little girls' forehead during a meal out. The 30-year-old basketball player called the outing, "My favorite type of date nights."

Tristan also shares 5-year-old son Prince Thompson with ex Jordan Craig. In January, he confirmed that he fathered a now two-month old baby boy with Maralee Nichols after previously disputing the child's paternity.

Tristan, who who last played for the Indiana Pacers, has acknowledged that he and Maralee had sex in March 2021 when he was in Houston, Texas. At the time, he appeared to still be in a relationship with Khloe, their breakup coming to light that spring.

In a statement posted to Instagram, the athlete apologized to the Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum, noting she doesn't "deserve the heartache and humiliation" he's caused. And while Tristan said he takes "full responsibility" for his actions and looks "forward to amicably raising" his newborn son, Maralee's rep recently claimed in a statement to E! News that Tristan "has done nothing to support their son."

The Good American founder hasn't directly commented on Tristian's third child, but, in true Khloe form, she has taken to social media to cryptically post about looking back while moving forward.

"In life we do things. Some we wish we had never done," she wrote on her instagram Stories earlier this month. "Some we wish we could replay a million times in our heads. But the all make us who we are, and in the end they shape every detail about it. If we were to reverse any of them we wouldn't be the person we are."

She added, "So just live, make mistakes, have wonderful memories. But never second guess who you are, where you've been and most importantly where you're going."

Loren and Alexei Feel "Helpless" as Baby Faces Complications in After the 90 Days Sneak Peek

In an E! News exclusive Loren & Alexei: After The 90 Days sneak peek, we get a glimpse into the days following the birth of baby Boten. Watch the emotional clip here.

The first few days following the birth of baby Boten were incredibly scary.

Loren and Alexei Brovarnik welcomed their second child Boten into the world back in August. And now, in a Loren & Alexei: After The 90 Days exclusive sneak peek, we get a first look at the struggles the couple faced after delivering the little one.

In the clip, Dr. Santos visits Loren and Alex in the recovery room and tells them that Boten must be intubated overnight. And while this was nerve wracking for them, the doctor assures the couple that once the medicine begins to work, their baby will be able to breathe on his own.

"When Dr. Santos says that he can't breathe on his own and that he's intubated, it's scary," Loren says in the clip. "You're like, 'Oh my gosh, is he going to make it?'"

"I questioned," she continues, "'Is it my fault that he can't breathe on his own? Is it my fault he came early? Could I have prevented it? Could I have done something different? Like, what did I do wrong?'"

And while they both have to wait to see their baby, Loren has to wait longer since she has a cold.

"Because of my positive RSV result," Loren explains, "we weren't even allowed to leave my room and the NICU was right next to our room. So it was so hard knowing that our baby was right there, and I couldn't even see him."

As for Alex, he says, "I was able to see our baby the next morning."

When Alex finally reunites with Boten, he becomes emotional seeing him attached to tubes and wires. "Really upsetting to see him like this and I'm glad Loren can't even come and see actually, cause I don't know how she would react," he says.

Nonetheless, he sends a photo to Loren to reassure her that Boten is being looked after, but she immediately breaks down.

"I just want to make sure he's okay," she says. "Because I can't be there for him, and it's the worst, most helpless feeling."

Watch the full clip above and tune into Loren & Alexei: After The 90 Days when it airs Monday, Feb. 21 on TLC.

Per a missing persons alert previously issued by authorities, Lindsey was last seen on Feb. 13 around noon local time near the Thai Town neighborhood of L.A. Police said in the alert that she "failed to return home," causing concern from her family and friends after no one had heard from her since her last sighting.

Her body was found nearly four miles away from her last sighting, with police saying she was discovered off Hollywood Boulevard.

Her cousin, Savannah Pearlman, tweeted on Feb. 17 that the actress was "last pinged on Sunset blvd."

Patrick Mahomes Seemingly Weighs In on Rumors He Asked Fiancée Brittany Matthews Not to Come to Games

Did Patrick Mahomes just throw down a flag? See what the NFL star had to say amid rumors that he's banned fiancée Brittany Matthews from attending Kansas City Chiefs games in the upcoming season.

It looks like Patrick Mahomes is spending his offseason tackling online rumors.

The Kanas City Chiefs quarterback took to Twitter on Friday, Feb. 18, amid troubling speculations about his relationship with his fiancée Brittany Matthews, with whom he shares 11-month-old daughter Sterling. According to Us Weekly and TMZ, a report surfaced on the same day alleging that the 26-year-old athlete had banned Brittany from attending football games in the upcoming NFL season because she was being a "distraction." E! News has not verified the report.

In a tweet, Patrick seemingly weighed in on the claims and wrote alongside three laughing emojis, "Y'all just be making stuff up these days."

The footballer also retweeted a meme from FanDuel that appeared to applaud his quick reaction to rumors. The company had tweeted next to an edited image of the Bat Signal shining an emoji of a blue cap to the sky, "Mahomes to the reports." (For those who aren't up on their textspeak, the cap emoji is often used to say that someone is lying.)

However, Patrick did not explicitly mention which rumors he was addressing.

The NFL star got engaged to Brittany, his high school sweetheart, in September 2020. The couple welcomed their first child together on Feb. 20, 2021.

Having known Patrick since they were teenagers, it's no surprise that Brittany is one of the athlete's biggest cheerleaders. Last month, she celebrated the Chiefs' win against the Buffalo Bills by popping a bottle of champagne and spraying it into the crowd.

"To all the fans who said do this, I freaking love y'all," she wrote on her Instagram Stories. "#ChiefsKingdom is the best fans in the world!!!!"

And it seems Brittany is not about to tone down her vocal support for Patrick any time soon. In October, when a Chiefs fan criticized her passion and claimed that she was "not giving the org a good look," the fitness entrepreneur tweeted back, "In the nicest way possible…Shut up."

Go Inside Kim Kardashian's "Calming" Home Featuring Artwork By North West

Kim Kardashian recently showed off some of the most meaningful items within her dreamy, minimalistic home in Calabasas, Calif., including some artwork done by daughter North West.

It's the little things that make Kim Kardashian's house a home.

The SKIMS founder, 41, took Vogue through a tour of her minimalist home in Calabasas, Calif., and shared some of her most meaningful possessions along the way, including a collection of artwork done by her eldest daughter North West.

"She's a really, really good artist and she loves to paint," Kim said, as she held up some of her 8-year-old daughter's creations including a painting of one of her beloved bearded dragons. "I love seeing the personality and the moods and everything that she goes through and is feeling. It's really been an amazing hobby of hers."

In addition to preserving North's art, Kim also crafts "the most epic baby books" for each of her four kids—North, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 2—who she shares with ex Kanye "Ye" West.

As she relaxed in her sitting room, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star also showed off her serious scrapbooking skills by sharing a glimpse into North's baby book and its finer details, including photos, hospital information, baby shower memories, sonograms and more.

"Anyone [who] knows me, they know that I love to scrapbook so that my kids can have the most amazing memories," she shared while reflecting on images from her and North's first Vogue shoot. "I really wanted to archive these memories. It's really, really cute."

And what's more—those special books also come with a handwritten message from Mom. "Then I write these long letters. I write a letter to each of one of my kids on their birthday," Kim said. "It'll just be so fun when they're older."

Who inspired Kim to keep such great records for her kids? Well, none other than her own mom, Kris Jenner, who used to do the same thing for her and her sisters when they were growing up.

As she sat right next to a trunk overflowing with childhood memories, Kim revealed that her mom kept everything from "every single birthday until I'm 10 years old."

That includes birthday cards from great grandparents, shoes, a stuffed rabbit that Kris knit herself and Kim's "favorite" childhood Minnie Mouse costume.

"I wore this when I was four years old and I was obsessed with Minnie Mouse," Kim shared. "The pictures of me and my mom dressed like Minnie Mouse are so incredibly cute. I still have them."

But all the action isn't just on the inside, of course. Taking a trip outside into her lavish backyard, Kim showed the meadow behind her home, her sleek basketball court and three of her most prized, all-gray cars: a Lamborghini Urus, a Rolls Royce and a Maybach Sedan.

"I've always been a car girl," Kim explained. "I love cars."

However, there was one in particular that holds a special place in her heart. Gesturing to her Maybach, she said, "If I were to pick one, that's my baby, right there."

Jake Gyllenhaal Breaks His Silence on Taylor Swift's ‘All Too Well'

Three months after Taylor Swift released the 10-minute version of her hit song "All Too Well," Jake Gyllenhaal is addressing the track that allegedly details their heartbreaking romance.

Did the love affair maim you too, Jake Gyllenhaal?

Jake Gyllenhaal Breaks His Silence on Taylor Swift's ‘All Too Well'

That's the question Taylor Swift fans are wondering after listening to the 10-minute version of her beloved song, "All Too Well," which was released in November on the updated version of her Red album. And although the 32-year-old superstar singer doesn't actually name Gyllenhaal in the track, it's long been rumored that the song—initially released in 2012—details the demise of their relationship.

While Gyllenhaal, 41, has stayed mum on the topic of Swift's song over the years, it appears he's ready to address the internet's fascination with the track and their 2010 romance. "It has nothing to do with me. It's about her relationship with her fans," he told Esquire in a new interview, published Feb. 17. "It is her expression. Artists tap into personal experiences for inspiration, and I don't begrudge anyone that."

However, the actor—who turned off his Instagram comments in late 2021 amid the re-release of the song—does have some thoughts on "cyberbullying."

"At some point, I think it's important when supporters get unruly that we feel a responsibility to have them be civil and not allow for cyberbullying in one's name," he noted. "That begs for a deeper philosophical question. Not about any individual, per se, but a conversation that allows us to examine how we can—or should, even—take responsibility for what we put into the world, our contributions into the world."

When asked specifically if he's listened to Red (Taylor's Version), Gyllenhaal replied, "No."

While the two have both moved on—Swift's been in a long-term romance with 30-year-old actor Joe Alwyn and Gyllenhaal is dating 26-year-old model Jeanne Cadieu—the Ambulance star understands the interest in his personal life.

"My life is wonderful," he shared with Esquire. "I have a relationship that is truly wonderful, and I have a family I love so much. And this whole period of time has made me realize that."

Candace Cameron Bure Says There Are a "Lot of Questions" After Bob Saget’s Family Sues Authorities

In a new interview, Candace Cameron Bure reflected on the weeks following Bob Saget’s death and his family’s new lawsuit against authorities.

Candace Cameron Bure is on a mission to remember the late Bob Saget for the person he was.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Feb. 16, Candace shared that she has kept in "close contact" with Bob's wife, Kelly Rizzo, since the Raising Dad star's passing on Jan. 9.

The anchor asked Candace if she knows how the family is doing, after they filed a lawsuit on Feb. 15, to block the release of the late actor's medical records. "I keep in close contact with Kelly," Candace explained. "It's been difficult these past couple weeks because of more things that have come out and there's a lot of questions."

The fellow Full House star, who acted alongside Bob for eight seasons, said she is "trying not to think about it" because she just wants "to remember Bob and what a kind and loving and amazing person that he was and let it be that."

On Feb. 15, Saget's wife Kelly and his three daughters,— Aubrey, Lara and Jennifer Saget,— filed a lawsuit against Orange County Sheriff John Mina and the District Nine Medical Examiner's Office in Florida. According to their complaint, "certain news and media outlets have filed or plan to file public records requests" regarding his death and the family requested an injunction to keep those materials private.

After the suit was filed, the family's attorney Brian Bieber told E! News in a statement, "In order to protect the Saget family's privacy, today on their behalf, I filed for an injunction to prevent the disclosure of any photographs or videos of Mr. Saget made by the authorities during their investigation."

In documents obtained by E! News on Feb. 16, a Circuit Court judge in Orange County, Fla., signed off on the decision to temporarily keep the medical records confidential, just hours after it was filed.

"Specifically, the Court finds that Plaintiffs will suffer irreparable harm in the form of severe mental pain, anguish, and emotional distress," the court documents filed on Feb. 16 read, "if the requested temporary injunction is not granted."

The Sheriff's Office told E! News they are "sensitive to the family's concerns about the right to privacy" but wish to balance that "with our commitment to transparency, compliance with the law, and the public's right to know."

The Medical Examiner also released a statement on Feb. 16, which stated that they will "continue to offer our condolences to the family and loved ones of Robert Saget," and gave "no comment" on the lawsuit.

Bob Saget, 65, was found dead inside a Ritz-Carlton Hotel room in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 9. In a statement obtained by E! News the following month, Saget's family confirmed his cause of death was head trauma.

The family further explained in the statement that authorities came to the conclusion Bob "accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep." They further noted that no drugs or alcohol were involved.

The statement ended on an uplifting note by asking fans to remember Bob for what he stood for, adding, "As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all: to be kind to everyone, to let the people you love know you love them, and to face difficult times with hugs and laughter."

Actor Ioan Gruffudd Files for Domestic Violence Restraining Order Against Estranged Wife Alice Evans

Almost a year after actor Ioan Gruffudd filed for divorce from wife Alice Evans, the Fantastic Four actor is taking legal action against his estranged partner.

Nearly one year after filing for divorce, Ioan Gruffudd has filed for a domestic violence restraining order against his estranged wife Alice Evans.

According to court documents obtained by E! News on Feb. 15, the 48-year-old actor filed the form of protection, which requests Evans, 53, to have no contact with him and to stay at least 100 yards away from him and his girlfriend, actress Bianca Wallace.

Gruffudd and Evans—who met on the set of 102 Dalmatians in 2000—married in 2007 and welcomed kids Ella, 12, and Elsie, 8, before their separation in January 2021. In late January 2021, in a series of tweets that have since been deleted, Evans wrote that the actor "announced he is to leave his family, starting next week."

She added, "Me and our young daughters are very confused and sad. We haven't been given a reason except that he ‘no longer loves me'. I'm so sorry."

In Gruffudd's petition, he noted the date of separation as "on or around January 1, 2021," adding that he filed for dissolution of marriage on March 1. Additionally, the actor said that he told Evans was "unhappy" the year before, in August 2020, with Evans stating that if he "left her, she would make false public accusations about me, sell false stories about me to the press, and destroy me and my career."

"Alice threatened to tell people I had abused her and our daughters," the petition read. "She threatened to call the police on me if I did not comply with her demands; she threatened to tell people I am a drug addict and put me in prison; she threatened to write a fake diary that reflected an abused victim, and to have the diary published; and she threatened to destroy my mother. Alice told me she would win, and everyone would believe her over me."

Gruffudd also said in the docs that Evans has "made many false and harassing posts about me on social media; has made false and harassing statements about me to the media, which were then published, and has sent hundreds of harassing, abusive and threatening communications by text, email, voice message and video messages."

Evans has since filed a response to Gruffudd's petition, stating that she "does not agree with the order requested," according to court documents obtained by E! News. In her response, she also states that she has "not hit, struck, attacked, threatened, assaulted, harassed, followed, stalked, molested, destroyed the personal property of, kept under surveillance, impersonated, blocked the movement of, annoyed by phone or electronic means by repeated contact, or disturbed the peace of either Petitioner or his girlfriend, Bianca Wallace."

Evans added that she didn't know the terms of Gruffudd's accusations, but declared that "whatever allegations he is going to make against me are false."

Chet Hanks Reveals "The Truth" About Growing Up as Tom Hanks' Son Amid “Toxic” Fame

Chet Hanks revealed what it was truly like to grow up with Tom Hanks as his dad, calling his experience a "double-edged sword" in new YouTube video.

Chet Hanks did not hold back about his life in the spotlight.

Chet Hanks Reveals

In a YouTube video uploaded Feb. 15, Chet has shared what it was

really like growing up as the son of actors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.

The 31 year old said that while he grew up very "blessed" with parents he loves, the unique experience was a "double-edged sword."

"There's a lot of advantages but sometimes it can be pretty weird," he said. "I got to do a lot of cool s--t that a lot of people don't get the opportunity to do. I got to travel the world, stay in nice hotels, fly on private planes and I'm very blessed for that. I wouldn't change my situation."

But he also reflected on how people's infatuation with fame can brew a lot of "jealousy" and "envy."

"My experience was even more complicated because on top of fame already being toxic, I wasn't even famous," Chet said. "I was just the son of somebody famous so I hadn't even done anything to deserve any sort of recognition and that created a lot of contempt."

He noted that after he attended the same school for preschool through middle school, things got worse when he entered a new crowd in high school and college.

"People would make up their minds about me before they even got the chance to know me and it was extremely hard to break down their walls," the Empire actor said, admitting that this experience led him to get a "chip" on his shoulder and develop a "hard exterior."

Chet added, "People kinda did f--k with me a lot growing up. It was never to my face. It was always behind my back in the forms of gossip or s--t talking."

Holding a mirror up to the man he once was and the man he is today, Chet shared that it took a long time for him to learn that "people's perception of you is only a reflection of themselves." He has now "changed" his "life" and is no longer on the "self-destructive" path of "anger" and "partying."

Chet, who recently faced backlash for his comments on the COVID-19 vaccine, also shared that his "hard exterior" was not just bred from anger, but also from being "ashamed" and "insecure" about growing up "privileged."

Before closing out, Chet promised that he will always give the "whole truth" about his life in Hollywood and that there is "more to come."

Matthew Stafford's Wife Kelly Fiercely Defends Him From Critics After Rams' Super Bowl Win

After the L.A. Rams won the 2022 Super Bowl, some started to speculate on whether quarterback Matthew Stafford would one day be a Hall of Fame candidate. See Kelly Stafford's message to haters.

Matthew Stafford's wife Kelly is coming to his defense.

After the quarterback and his Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals at the 2022 Super Bowl, some started to speculate on whether he could one day end up in the Hall of Fame. However, Kelly didn't waste any time tackling the critics.

"Can y'all just let him enjoy this?!" she wrote on Instagram Stories Tuesday, Feb. 15. "It went from Matthew can't win, to Matthew can't win against winning teams, to Matthew can't win big games, to Matthew can't win playoff games, to Matthew can't win it all. And now…the debate on the HOF?"

Indeed, the podcast host and mom of four felt like this was an unfair call. "We shouldn't be talking about the HOF because he isn't done playing this game," she continued. "If you don't believe he is a HOFer..I can't wait for him to prove you wrong in his remaining years…just like he did IN ONE YEAR to everyone who said all the things listed above. So let's table this talk until he actually retires? Thank you."

While Kelly didn't call anyone out by name, there have been several players and sports analysts who've weighed in on this debate. Richard Sherman, for instance, made an argument against Matthew being a Hall of Fame candidate.

"There is no measuring stick that makes Stafford a hall of famer other than playing in the most passer happy decade in NFL history," the cornerback tweeted. "Inflated numbers make ever QB that starts 10+ years a 'hof.'"

Michael Robinson, however, made the case that Matthew should get the honor. "Yes, he's a gold jacket. Absolutely," the NFL Network analyst and former fullback said on Good Morning Football. "The numbers bear it out and now the ultimate team goal—which is to win a Lombardi, to win a Super Bowl—Matthew Stafford actually has and he was a huge part of winning this particular Super Bowl."

While only time will tell, one thing is for sure: Matthew's Super Bowl victory was a big moment for both him and his family—as seen through his and Kelly's postgame embrace.

"It was kind of like a embrace of the past 12 years of our life. We've had four kids, a brain tumor, a broken back, so many things," she told Good Morning America, referencing a surgery she underwent in 2019 to remove an acoustic neuroma from her cranial nerves and a back injury Matthew suffered in 2019 while playing for the Detroit Lions. "I feel like we both just like exhaled and really took in that moment being like this is what you worked so hard for. This is what we came here for. Really, it was just all those emotions getting let out."

Mariah Carey Shares Sweet Selfie With Boyfriend Bryan Tanaka After Nick Cannon's Public Plea

Just two days after Nick Cannon released his latest single, sharing his sweet, sweet fantasy about ex Mariah Carey, the Grammy winner seemed to respond without saying a word.

While Nick Cannon is out here sharing his feelings in verse, ex-wife Mariah Carey may just have a different vision of love.

Just two days after the Wild N' Out star released an ode dedicated to his ex-wife, Mariah shared a peek at her Valentine's Day spent with her boyfriend of more than five years, Bryan Tanaka. The Grammy winner captioned their Feb. 15 Instagram selfie, "Valentine's marathon continues. Hour 23!"

And as Mariah's Instagram followers aptly pointed out, considering the timing, there may just be a chance she heard the ballad from her ex-husband, father of "Dem Babies," a.k.a. their 10-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe.

For those who'd offer up an "I don't know her" regarding Nick's new single "Alone," he starts off with expressing that he "has nothin' but love" for Mariah, his wife of six years. But he also acknowledges that she has since moved on in the years since their 2014 split, singing, "Imma keep my distance, stay in my lane / Cause I know you got a man, it's a little too late."

Not that Nick has exactly been riding solo, having welcomed five additional children with three women in the past four years, with another on the way.
